Commercial Description:
What is it? Barleywines are super strength beers that have their roots in old England. They are comparable to Ports or Sherry in their sweet flavor and high potency. Ours is more of an American style in that it has been infused with massive amounts of hops. How was it made so strong? Lots of malt. In other words, lots of food for yeast. More yeast food equals more alcohol. When there is so much alcohol though, the beer needs time fore those flavors to mellow out. So we aged Hopsquatch for one year in stainless. This long aging period also allowed some of the harsh bitter flavor from the hops to buffer out and blend with all of the other flavors. This creates a fine, full flavored, very complex ale. What’s with the name? Traditionally barleywines have colorful names like, Monster, Old Nick, Sudden Death, Old Knucklehead, Old Fart, etc. Ours is no different. When we brewed it we had these metaphorical visions of a twelve foot tall hop-covered beast lurking in the cellar for a year. No body believed us, so like the legend of Bigfoot, Hopsquatch was born… That, and it sounds funny. What’s with the "Pimp-Chalice" glassware? See the above description (Hat tip to all the brewers on this one).

Served in a snifter that accentuates the sweet, roasted peach aromas. Presented with a rich head and deep, auburn body. Taste of sweet maple takes over the taste buds and it finishes with a bright hop tinge. Fantastic beverage...I’m glad they started offering this monthly instead of seasonally.

One of the first beers from the new batch of this in Tempe. Big tan head that looks like they attached a beeker to the top of a small fishbowl. Body was darker amber color. Great citrus hop aromas along with some sweet malts. Reminded me of a scotch aroma than beer. Flavor was well balaned between the slightly sweet malts and alcohol content. Smooth easy drinking beer with a slight butterscotch taste on the palate.

This is the best beer Four Peaks has to offer, an excellent barleywine. It usually doesn’t last very long when they offer it, last year one batch only lasted 6 hours.

12-oz., left over from WBC ’06. Easily worthy of the gold for barley wine that WBC gave it this year. Deep pumpkin orange, almost roasted. White head shows up *after* it sits for a few minutes--all the crud and sludge swirling around in this beer keeps it from appearing up top for a while. Amazing stuff: those nose comes on with light spice and bread, as well as some citric sweet and hoppy crispness. The body’s the phenomenal thing about this beer. It’s thick and viscous but without any stickiness or undue sweetness. No vinous overtones anywhere in the nose, palate, or finish. This is a mature barleywine right out of the gate. Complex and rewarding without any of the swampy bogginess common to so many of even the finest examples of the style. I wish I could drink beer like this all the time.

Bottled sample via the kind hand of after4ever. Pours a cloudy orange amber with a thick, lacy off-white head. The aroma is rich with toffee, pine, oranges. The taste is smooth, rich, lightly sweet; with caramel, sherry, vanilla, fruit. The finish is grapefruit with a slight bit of pine. This beer is amazingly well rounded, and gives little hint of the alcohol content. This is the good stuff.

Served in a nice Pimp-Chalice. Nice dark amber with a huge thick head and awesome lacing. Aroma of sweet malts and caramel with very light alcohol in the background. Flavor is sweet malt with the alcohol very well hidden. This barleywine only got better as it warmed and was so easy drinking that I had to order another! Good beer!

Had this last night on draft at Pizza Port’s strong ale fest. Being a hophead, this was one of my favorites for the night. Very floral and pretty nose with clean hop notes. Flavor profile wsa almost all hops, but a nice balance of the high piney notes with the earthy flavors from medium boils. Slightly cloudy amber pour with no head. I want more!
