alexanderj (2212), Chino Hills, California, USA Oct 22, 2009 Can (as Sunbru Kolsch). Poured a clear paled gold with an average sized white head. Aroma of pale malt, bread and honey. Ok flavor with sweet malt, honey and a touch of yeasty fruitness. A light tingling of hops in the finish. An ok beer that does nothing to differentiate itself from others in the style, either positively or negatively. Avengedpoet (325), Mesa, Arizona, USA Apr 5, 2009 I haven’t given this beer enough of a chance in the past, always eschewing it in favor of their better beers. The Kolsch is actually pretty tasty. Pours a nice straw color. Has a light malty nose, with some hints of other fruity-ish tones that I can’t really identify, but I am guessing are a by-product of the yeast. Taste is very clean, with very little hop bitterness coming through. This would make a great refreshment beer on a hot day. There is just enough interesting esters from the yeast to make this beer not completely boring. GuilTTy (527), Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA Feb 21, 2009 On tap at their Scottsdale Grill & Tap. Crystal clear sunflower pour under a thin white head. Mildly fruity and bready aroma. More fruit in the flavor with touches of honeydew and a little pear. Light texture but not watery and a mellow, slightly sweet finish. BrotherGrendel (545), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Feb 8, 2009 A- Clear straw hue, wisps of head and lacing
S- Pale malts, vaguely lager-ish, not much going on with the aroma
T- Clean and crisp ale reminiscent of a light lager, initial taste is pale malts and bread malts, finishes bitter, unimpressive
M- Light-bodied, watery texture, moderate carbonation
D- Easy drinking and smooth at 5%abv, not much flavor or body, I am not a big fan of the style and would unlikely seek this out again in the future bhensonb (4181), Woodland, California, USA Oct 15, 2008 On tap in Tempe as Sunbru Kolsch. Pale gold color with a white head. Not much aroma. Flavor is lightly citrus over pale malt. Near medium body. Clean. Refreshing. ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Aug 30, 2008 I didn’t have a problem with this beer at all. I was with nbutler11 and made the more storied move of committing to a full pint rather than the sampler shot. What I saw was a beer much lighter in color than the Kolsch I had in Cologne, Germany. It was much lighter as well, with watery fruit notes (underripe orange) and mild wheat - oddly no yeast or flour. This seems to be for anyone who wants something more fortified than a wit but doesn’t want to kick it up to an ale - in a college town, not sure who this would be... nbutler11 (729), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Aug 30, 2008 Pours golden from the tap at Four Peaks with a trim white head. Mildly carbonated with faint peaches on the nose. As much as I’d like to say I remember the flavor, though, it was apparently THAT forgettable. RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Aug 26, 2008 On tap at some hotel in some town in AZ - God I hate travel! Clear light yellow, decent bright white head and lacing. Bit of citrus on the nose and palate. Light malt and bread flavors with a touch of spices. Very soft on the palate, like a good pilsener, with good carbonation and an pleasant aftertaste. A nice simple beer, just not worth pursuing.
