Mild aroma, toasty with a molasses note. Light to medium bodied, quite dry, nutty and a bit smoky with some bakers chocolate in the flavor. Nice crisp and bitter finish. rajendra82 (704), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA

At the local beverage store I was debating between chosing a hearty ale or a crisp pilsner. Decided to give this Alt a try instead as it is a nice compromise among the two. The head on the beer was impressive at the start but receded to fairly thin line unlike the british style ales where it generally persists longer. The beer leans more towards malty to dry rather than an overly hoppy taste. Very refreshing and smooth like a lager but not as bland. This is very drinkable brew that is somewhat let down by a lack of body. Will try again from time to time. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 10, 2004 This was pleasant to drink. Pours much like you would ex[ect a can of cola to do, dark brown with a big fizzy head, that fades very quickly, leaving behind some very nice lacing. The flavor is predominantly dry, saaz, perhaps some rye. Not alot of bite, but lots of nice malty flavors, bread and caramel, with a bit of salt and pepper in the finish. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 10, 2004 Dark amber-brown colour with a rocky white head that fades to thin lace. Light floral aroma over some brown sugar, nuts, and yeast. Taste is also quite floral with some light caramel flavour and a fair amount of yeastiness. Light finish of Saaz (or similar) hops. My first of this style and it really reminds me of many lagers that I've had despite it's being an ale. Tasty. Hopistotle420 (1178), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 2, 2004 Clear orange-amber-brown. Steady carbonation. Big foamy beige head. Nutty, fruity nose. Pleasantly sweet, nutty, caramel, toffee-ish, light bodied, finishing dry and peppery, faint nuttiness. This is very drinkable and quite satisfying. A prime example of a true Alt. bbrock81 (221), Le Mars, Iowa, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Feb 26, 2004 Updated: Apr 5, 2005On tap: nice malty aroma; medium-dark brown (pretty dark in a liter dimpled mug, but I get the impression it wouldn’t be so dark in more common glassware); wonderful flavor, malty, even subtly fruity, bitter finish.
Bottled: musty aroma, lightly malty; medium brown, about the color of Coke after the ice has started to melt; the flavor is much less complex (and much lighter) than the tapped beer was. It’s not nearly as good, tastes watered down. Lightly malty flavor with an even lighter hop finish. Not bad, but not remarkable.
You can find better bottles of beer, but if this is on tap around you it’s certainly worth a try. Frank (1071), Chicago, Illinois, USA
