The aroma is sweet, yeasty, malty and slightly sour. The flavor is sweet, caramel, and malty. It ends on a nice bitter note combined with hoppyness. A very nice flavor. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 10, 2004 Alt is one of my favorite styles, so I'm pretty critical in this category. This passes my tests, but it's missing that smoked wood undertone that I note in other genuine German alts like Konigsbacher. This is a bit sweeter and a little lighter in feel than Konigsbacher, but it's nevertheless malty enough to hold my interest. Quite smooth with a dry finish. A great everyday beer. A touch of tan colored lacing and a nice sized (initially) head. Aroma has a touch of caramel & molasses, some roastyness and some light hops come through as well. The flavor is very dry and astringent but sweet with a well balanced finish. Overall this is a spot on german alt with some solid flavors but a detracting finish. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 7, 2004 Pours deep chocolate brown. Golden caramel color when held up to a light. Nice thick head, good strong lace. Aroma is like that of a bakery, slightly moldy bread and a succinct of sweetness. Chocolate malt comes to mind on first sip, with a quick follow of hoppiness. Very well balanced. Easy to drink, the more I consume this as I write, the more I am enjoying this German "old" style beer. The finish is creamy; not cloying. It begs for another sip. I recommend this to anyone as a quintessential Alt Bier. BBB63 (4271), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 13, 2003 Clear brown hue with frothy off-white head and good lace. The aroma hints of toasted malt, wood, earthy yeast, nuts, and european aromatic hops. The taste has a grassy and citric nature with mild sweet nut background. An acidic and herbal finish. Medium-bodied and lively mouthfeel, dry finish. Solid brew and very much within the style. Enjoyable and recommended for someone seeking out something from this genre.
