Very nice dark beer. Deep brown color with a suprisingly small head. Deep flavor with molasses finish.

Goodbar beer club. Nose is chocolate, nearly burnt malt, some iodine & burnt notes. Flavor is very dark (nearly burnt) malt, cocoa, maybe a little diacteyl. Suddenly goes from rich to a dry burnt (vaguely smoky) finish.

12 oz bottle. (#5 COTF 5/06). Black with a small head. Aroma is burnt wood from a week old campfire. Taste is bitter Some chocolate and just the faintest bit of smoke. Nice carbonation just not enough caramel for the style but it’s worth dealing with twelve ounces of.

On tap at the Bavarian Inn Deep dark brown pour, with a creamy even tan head. Light soy and toasted oat aroma. Tinge of cofee. Moderately watery tobacco, charred oak and toast. Seems more like a schwarzbier. Light molasses and tinge of grass in the finish of hops. A light sour aftertaste.

With the high quality of beers I’ve had from the Frankenmuth area, I was quite frankly disappointed with this. The aroma and appearance were OK at best, but the only flavor I got was burnt grain/strong coffee with a thin, watery mouthfeel. For flavors like that, I’ll stick to more nuanced and complex stouts that have a heavier feel on the tongue. Note: since Local Color closed, this beer is now brewed by Michigan Brewing Co. in Webberville.

A very good dark. I wish it was available at more than just the Bavarian Inn. I guess I will have to come back more often to enjoy this dark.

Tap: world beer expo/Frankenmuth. Dark transparent brown with decent head. Aroma has some sweet malt/lager but very muted. Flavor is all sour skunk.
