acrdz (4376), Boulder, Colorado, USA Apr 2, 2008 Pint at the brewery. Cloudy bread crust brown body. Proper clove, toast, mild fruit and nuts in the nose, more of a pulpy fruit character tasted, makes me think of pulp (as in orange) from plums (which I guess doesn’t really exist). Nutty, bready, soggy, chewy, toasty; overall it’s a pretty solid dubbel, with just a hint of alcohol at the end.
nimbleprop (594), Washington, Washington DC, USA Apr 29, 2008 Stopped by the brewpub to pick up a growler and saw that they were offering this on cask. I asked for a sample and the bartender told me, "Tell me if you like it, I think it’s weird." The same of the cask Double Vision pours a clear purple brown with no head. The aroma is heavy alcohol and vinegar. The flavor was similar, very astringent, citrus bitterness, fusel alcohol and a little metallic tinge. Finish was very pungent. Needless to say, I passed on the cask version.
The version on tap that I ultimately got for my growler was much better. Pours a purpley, brown with a thin white head. Aroma was spicy, bread, nuts, clove and slight citrus all marry well. Flavor has much more of the grain, biscuit, dark/sweet fruit and a bit of yeast. Definite alcohol on the end and slightly thick on the tongue. I don’t love Belgian, but this was very drinkable and a nice change of pace from Franklins. Styles (1653), Taylor, Michigan, USA Oct 13, 2007 Growler sample courtesy of artusory. Muddy medium brown, minimal head. Roast, pepper and spice up front, chewy yeast background. Flavor has some faint banana, pepper and more spice, hard to pinpoint. As it warms even more, get a certain vegetal character I can’t pinpoint. Mouthfeel rather thin at times. Pailhead (2323), Allen Park, Michigan, USA May 27, 2007 Courtesy of artusory
Growler: The aroma is fruity and yeasty with some notes of burnt wood, alcohol, and vegetables. It pours a cloudy brownish-orange with a small off-white head. The flavor starts yeasty with some candi sugar, fruit, burnt wood, and slight vegetal notes. The finish has some faint bitterness and alcohol. CaptainCougar (4664), Rockville, Maryland, USA May 2, 2007 Pours a hazy dark copper mahogany with a thin ring of wispy white head. Has a lightly toasted, bready caramel malty aroma with a touch of light fruit. Starts lightly malty sweet with some dark candi sugar drying out toward a more bitter, earthy finish. Fairly well-balanced and authentic.
