ryan (1673), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Oct 29, 2007 Black/dark brown body with a small tan head. The nose is roast, dark chocolate, oats and molasses. The flavor is very roasty and lightly sweet with coffee, milk chocolate and oats. Medium body is round with light carbonation and a bitter finish. kmweaver (1808), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Aug 26, 2007 Draft, Franklin’s. Pours a murky brown color; medium brown head that quickly fades to nothing. Pleasant cocoa and dark chocolate in the aroma; minimal hop presence (if any); a hint of fennel / licorice. Fizzy carbonation. Medium mouthfeel: cocoa and bitter chocolate; slightly acidic citrus presence, but not really from any refined hop character; drinkable, with plenty of chocolate. Medium, cocoa and bitter chocolate finish. BBB63 (3677), La Porte, Indiana, USA Aug 19, 2007 Post MiBGF party, growler provided by Ryan, THANKS! Murky brown hue with a fading small beige head and minimal lace. The aroma has notes of chocolate, oat, biscuit, smoke, dusty yeast, aromatic light tobacco and a hint of coffee. The taste starts with heavy roasted malt overtones, bready and nutty with a lush chocolate background. I found a hint of prune and coffee in midsection and the brew finished slight oxidized and dry. The mouth feel is lively and sharp at first before the dusty finish. A workable brew that seemed a tad old for some reason. Growler: The aroma consists of chocolate, oatmeal, roasted coffee, and faint vanilla. It pours a muddy brown with almost no head. The flavor starts with faint chocolate. The finish with lots of bitter coffee with very faint vanilla. Ungstrup (10824), Frederiksberg, Denmark Nov 3, 2006 A very black beer with no head. The aroma is quite light, but what is there is sweet roasted combined with notes of oatmeal. The flavor is sweet and very malty and with notes of oatmeal. I find it a bit boring, but definately the most malty beer from Franklin’s that I’ve sampled.
