Commercial Description:
This is a German Helles style lager. Helles is German for “bright”. These began to be produced in Munich around 1890 as a response to the popularity of Czeck Pilsner beers and are marked by a light color, smooth malt flavor and modest hop character. This beer primarily relies on top quality Pilsner malt for its flavor and body. American Vanguard hops are used to add a subtle hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. It is a lager style, or bottom fermented beer, which showcases the flavors of the ingredients over the flavors of the yeast. We originally brewed this beer in celebration of Lawrence’s 150th anniversary in 2004, hense the name 1854 Helles. OG 12.5° P/1050 Hops - 20 IBU

Tap @ brewpub. Color is clear golden with a thick head at first, fades to nothing much. Just a plain thick white bread malty brew, well lagered down. Finally executed but at the end boring.

Growler courtesy of both Gregis and csbosox. Pour is clear golden copper with a nice one inch white head. Aroma of soft toasty malt, a bit of grassy hoppiness. Subdued nose, but pleasant. Taste is the lightly toasted malt, hint of sweetness, grassy earhty hops. As with the nose, clean and subdued. Palate is medium to low carbonation, quick and clean finish. Thanks for sharing this one guys.

pours a clear and very light and bright yellow Lots of carbonation. Big white head pilsner malt front dominates the flavor with a slightly nutty backing and a nice tight finish overall a damn good beer.

Was at Free State a couple days ago and took notes. It was on tap. Yellow in color, white head, and good lacing. Nice fresh, lemon aroma. Flavor is lemony, refreshing, and light malt. Palate is a little buttery in texture, a little creamy and very refreshing. Good for summer!

On tap at the brewpub. Golden color with a smallish white head. Brilliant clarity. Lightly kined malt, almost cracker like, with some herbal hops. Flavor is crisp malt, herbal hops. Very clean. A little residual sweetness but still a nice amount of hop bitterness. A clean, easy to drink beer.

Tap @ FS, pours a clear and very light and bright yellow, small white head, moderate lacing. Flavor is faint as expected, with some lemon and pale malts. Flavor is also light with just a hint of lemon and more light malts. Refreshing and easy to drink, but as expected not that interesting.

From notes last summer. Pint at the brew pub. Poured a clear golden. Aroma of malty sweetness and spicy hops. Nice easy to drink balanced beer a little sweet malt and a little spicy hops. It reminded me of some of the nice European pilseners.

From a growler at a homebrew club meeting. Pale yellow. Lots of carbonation. Big white head. Pretty robust grain aroma with a solid punch of noble hops. Slight corn flavor with a refreshing bitterness. Really nice easy drinking mouthfeel.
