Commercial Description:
This ale is the first brewed in Kansas since pioneering days. The name "Ad Astra comes from the Kansas State Motto - Ad Astra per Aspera, Latin words meaning "To the Stars through Difficulties". We've blended Pale, Caramel, and Munich malts for a rich amber beer. The hops balance this malty sweetness, and we've chosen Northern brewer and Fuggles hops for their flavor.

Deep amber with a bountiful beige head. Flavor is malty and caramely, but not all that interesting. Rather bland.

On Tap in Overland Park-Barley’s- Decent amber ale, but would like a little more hops to balance out the malt. Hard to say how fresh it was considering the number of taps they had avail.

Re-Rate: I have a keg at my home now. Fresher than before. Bumped the aroma, flavor, and overall up 1 point. This is a much better product than is served at Old Chicago. As Astra is a pretty good session beer. Not a lot there to overwhelm, but enough to make it interesting. Dark red to brown in color, served with no head. Aromas of backed goods, and some brown sugar. Light sweet toasted flavor with decent bitterness. Light inthe body.

[At GABF 2004] A copper colored beer with a beutiful orange head. The aroma is sweet and sour with notes of berries. The flavor is sweet nutty with a dry hoppy end.

I thnk this is Free States most popular beer, but while I liked it, I dont think it was thier best ... which doesn’t necessarily say a lot about the brewery because most range from good to outstanding. Tap: I thought it was a very nice dark reddish-brown-copper color (not quite as dark as mahogony wood). Had more carbination than I was expecting (in appearence, as it wasn’t there as much in mouthfeel). Definitly some carmel and sweet malty flavor.

Biscuit malt in aroma, nice cherry-mahoghany color that shimmers in the glass. Thick, sweetish, caramel flavor, unhoppy and yet dryish finish. Solid mouthfeel. Flavorful but not real appealing to me.
