Commercial Description:
Black Jack Porter Baltic Porter is a somewhat blended style, popular in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea. It’s based on the English Porter style and strongly influenced by Russian Imperial Stouts. The resulting dark ale is stronger and more full bodied than a traditional Porter but doesn’t have the intensity of an Imperial Stout. What we have is a rich, malty beer with notes of chocolate and roast malt overtones. The flavor has been mellowed further by conditioning on a blend of French and American oak. Served unfiltered. O.G. 18.40/1074. Hops 30 IBUs

Pours really black without much of a head. Strong coffee and bitter chocolate on the nose and the tongue. Hops are a nice redeeming presence among all the dark notes. Well-rounded, but I can’t shake the feeling that this is a little generic in the malt category and plain for a porter.

Growler shared with theisti. Pours black with a creamy, light tan head that laces nicely as it diminishes to a thin wispy skin at the surface. The nose is chocolaty with notes of roasted malt, vanilla and some subtle dark fruit. Medium-bodied and super-slick with a fairly clean, roasted finish. Sweet and slightly tart dark roast and chocolate with a pleasant, roasted and lightly dry finish. This is another great beer from Free State. Nice work, Steve.

Growler generously shared by Gregis. Poured into a snifter. Pour is mostly black with a nice one inch head. Very pretty in the glass. Aroma of soft roastiness, with a faint approachable sweetness - maybe dried cherries? Some vanilla notes present as well. Nice, not as bold and in your face as others I have had, though certainly in a good way. Taste is really mellow and soft, great roastiness, sweet dark cocoa, and woody vanilla oakiness. Great flavor, everything is nicely blended together. Nice drying finish. This was really excellent - great stuff. Thanks for sharing this one Greg!

Poured black with a fluffy tan head. Aroma of chocolate. Lots of chocolate flavor in this guy. The smooth chocolate overpowers whatever else is trying to escape. Not bad. Thanks Matt for the hook up!

Handbottle thanks to tjthresh. Poured a pretty dark black with not much of a head at all. Aroma and flavor had some chocolate and coffe but a little weak. A little roastiness and a light body.

On tap at brewpub. Poured dark brown with a creamy light brown head. Aroma was roasted notes, and sweet chocolate both of which were rather average in their potency. Flavor was well roasted, toasted bread, minor sweet chocolate, and some earth notes. Creamy mouthfeel with a solid malt body.

22oz bottle hand bottled shared by bgburdman9 - Pours dark brown with a slight tan head. Aromas of smoke, chocolate, and roast. as well as some nutty notes. Flavor is roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. This one seemed to really fall short on the palate to me though it was quite watery and lacked the body to make it a good baltic.
