Commercial Description:
Black Jack Porter Baltic Porter is a somewhat blended style, popular in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea. It’s based on the English Porter style and strongly influenced by Russian Imperial Stouts. The resulting dark ale is stronger and more full bodied than a traditional Porter but doesn’t have the intensity of an Imperial Stout. What we have is a rich, malty beer with notes of chocolate and roast malt overtones. The flavor has been mellowed further by conditioning on a blend of French and American oak. Served unfiltered. O.G. 18.40/1074. Hops 30 IBUs

22-oz. hand-bottled from tjthresh. Pours dark brown with a spare, fizzy, light brown head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (caramel, nutty), light hops (grass), average yeast (dough) with notes of cocoa. Medium bodied, thin texture, soft carbonation and a chalky finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness; chocolate and cocoa malt flavor.

Hand bottle shared by bgburdman at C-Bus 6: Dark brown pour with a white head. Aroma is roasty, with some caramel, and sweet chocolate notes. Flavor, coffee, some chocolate and dark fruits, some roasted notes. It’s very thin though, almost anorexic.

Shared by bgburdman at C-bus 6. Not a ton of aroma here--a light weak coffee. Almost black in color with a medium to light palate. Light malt and weak coffee flavors--unimpressive effort.

Tap @ FS; pours a dark black, thin tan head and great lacing. Roasty aroma of chocolate, molasses and espresso. Taste is a thick mouthfeel that provides a nice coating of malts that lingers. A nice take on a baltic porter! **Rerate, 03/28/2008, bumped it up after trying again this year, good as ever, and seemingly a bit more depth of character this time around. Good stuff!**

Dark brown to black just sitting in the glass. Tawny when held to light. Smallish tan head. Quite a bit of malt flavor with a nice dry finish. Chocoate, charcoal, roast. Some vanilla notes. No real hop character. Sort of a marshmallow fluff mouth feel.

This is one of my favorite styles and this would be one of the shining examples of this. The oak againg is especially present, with a mellow smokiness that medls into some woody vanilla notes, but not to be overdone by the roastiness of the malts the creaminess of the chocolate and some bready fruity esthers as well. Just a hint of molasses, candy and brownsugar with just a bit of licorice in the finish. A truly fine beer

Pours a dark, dark brown with red highlights. Light brown head. Aroma of coffee, tobacco, and roasted malt, with just a touch of dark fruitiness. Flavor of coffee, burnt oak, vanilla, and molasses. Chocolate and dry wood in the finish. Moderately hopped. Smooth, thick mouthfeel. Thanks to TAR for this one.

09.29.05 GABF Dark maple brown. Aromas of rubber, tobacco, fruit salad. Mild and thin compared to Koff and others. Great bitterness, roasty goodness.
