Commercial Description:
This is a smooth dark German style lager often made in the spring or fall as a sort of tonic. This is a smooth and malty beer with a delicate hop balance. Named after early Lawrence industrialist J.D. Bowersock. Bowersock constructed the Bowersock Mills & Power Co just to the north of our location on the banks of the Kansas River This early hydro-electric plant supplied power to most of downtown as well as to other riverside industries. The power plant still exists and is operated by Bowersock's descendants. Bowersock also built Liberty Hall , once the Bowersock Theater, on the ruins of the 1880s Bowersock Opera House which burned in 1911. Liberty Hall stands just to our south and is now a thriving venue for movies and live productions of all sorts.

Draft from minikeg at the KC Biermeisters Homebrew Competition. Highly roasty, grainy, dark malt aroma, some black bread and very faint coffee noted, plenty of brown malts and toasty grain present, joined with a slight amount of spicy hop and background chocolate sweetness. Actually pretty enticing. Clear dark brown in color with a lasting, fine head. Flavor profile is lightly sweet, roasty, grainy and gently bitter, with a hint of dark fruit - prune, raisin, etc. and a bit more spicy bitterness at the finish. Palate is smooth and thin with light-moderate effervescence and a medium body. Something about this beer is very oddly familiar... I actually got deja vu, and really feel like I’ve been taken back in time to my early beer experiences, somehow. Very odd, but pretty cool! This might garner a few nostalgia points as a result. Regardless, it’s a really tasty Bock.

Growler shared by csbosox at his tasting, on 3/7/08. Pours burgundy with a thin beige head. The nose is a muted, burnt caramel and little more. Light-bodied and thin, with soft carbonation and a moderately dry, clean finish. Sweet caramel with burnt caramel highlights and just enough hops to dry out the finish a bit. I found this a fairly tasty and drinkable bock, and this isn’t a style that I tend to love. Thanks for sharing this one, Chris!

Growler, shared by csbosox at his tasting on 3/7/08. Pour is deep brown, with mahogany notes. Head is khaki and fades fast. Aroma of some floral sweetness, nuttiness. Taste is nutty, sweet, caramelly. Really nice body / palate. Really nice balance between the nutty malt and floral hops throughout on this one. Very drinkable Bock. Another nice one from Free State, thanks for sharing Chris.

On tap at the brewpub. Dark red/maroon with a tan head and nice lace. Big malts nose with toffee and subtle chocolate. Fresh herbal hops. Very malty flavor with a slight bitter finish. Fuller body. Average carbonation. Balanced finish. This is a damn fine example of a bock.

On tap. I had one at the brewery tonight and I’m having another from a co2 pushed keg. Maroon colored with a khaki head. Aroma is malty with some nice melanoidins and toastiness and a bit of roast along with a light herbal hop aroma. The hops are very subtle. The taste is quite melanoidin-rich and malty, with some toastiness, cracker-like flavors and light chocolate. A nice, full body. Enjoyable.
