Apr 18, 2007 On tap at the brewpub, then later from a growler at home. Pours dark amber with a decent white head. The aroma is very floral with sweet citrus - this is all hops. Medium / thick body that is very resinous with some gentle soft carbonation. The flavor starts with dry grapefruit and light wood. There is some toasted earthy malt for balance only. The finish has heavy resin and is quite bitter. The is no sweetness on the taste. There were some differences from the growler - the aroma has more earthy malts and toasted English malt backing. There was a lot more malt in the taste making it taste more like a British and American IIPA, but on tap it was very West Coast. A Hoppy thumbs up for this IIPA that was enjoyable on tap and in the growler despite its differences.

Apr 16, 2007 Draft, at csbosox KC tasting 4/14. Thanks for putting this one on Chris! Pour is cloudy reddish orange. Smallish white head, aroma is big, very wet hops. Taste is same big wet hop, and nice. I thought the taste may have a hung around a bit too long, but for big hop heads, this would be a plus.

Apr 2, 2007 Fresh growler from FS, pours a very cloudy orange color with a decent white head that dissipates down to a whispy covering, good lacing. Strong and inviting aroma of hops, hops and more hops; orange/tangerine, floral, pine, grass, and even some mild malty caramel coming through. Has a great fresh, wet hops taste, bitter and biting on the palate with a covering yet slick mouthfeel, gentle carbonation and a lasting bitter dry hop finish. Another great one from FS; highly recommended!

Oct 23, 2006 GTM ’06 Draught. Very nice aroma but there’s something about the hop combination that wasn’t quite ideal. Perhaps it’s wet hop. Murky, reddish orange. Off-white head, somewhat lasting. Beautiful color. Raw, fresh, wet hop flavor...very nice. Restores my faith in the Free State Brewery.

Oct 10, 2006 GABF 2006. Big ole’ west coast hop aroma. Hazy pale yellow. Taste is vegetal, earthy hops. Very restrained, not overly bitter. Nice balance against some soft, sweet malts. Medium bodied. Solid.

Oct 9, 2006 Draft... GABF ’06... Cloudy, light golden ale with a small, creamy, white head. Earthy aroma with notes of leather and tree bark; hints of pine and smoke. The flavor is heavily bitter and a just a little tangy. No residual sweetness. Medium-bodied and very astringent with moderate carbonation. Lengthy, heavily bitter finish.

Oct 8, 2006 GABF ’06: Lovely hop nose didn’t tease, as the rich hop flavors and wafty aromas carried through the first sip. Juicy, citrusy (tangerine and some grapefruit), sprucy and sour. Nice texture throughout. Chew-smooth malts balanced everything out well. Tasty stuff.

Oct 6, 2006 GABF 2006. Top 5 IIPA @ the fest. The Californian way of brewing these beers has gotten to Kansas. Wish it would finalyy reach the South. Everything you want in a IIPA.
