Aroma is very boozy with lots of prune. There is also an alcohol licorice mix as well. The beer has an extremely viscous mouthfeel and reall works well with this brew. The alcohol lets up in the flavor a bit as well. Has a thick black tea-roast-coffee thing. Love the mouthfeel but the alcohol is too strong on the nose. cgarvieuk (4179), Edinburgh, Scotland

Rich, creamy chocolate, silky and smooth with some warmth. There is lots of cappuccino in this along with a good double shot of espresso. Some oakiness and vanilla towards the end, nice. railcat1 (581), Orlando, Florida, USA

Pretty dead pouring with a non-existing head and a bit thin looking actually. A bit sharp on the flavour profile with notes of whisky dominating all else. Some black licorice, and anise. A bit of char on the backend and this just seems disjointed. Mouthfeel disappoints as it’s thinner than I would’ve liked to have seen. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 7, 2008 Growler - 2004 Vintage. Pours extremely dark and oily, with a small to almost nothing head. Roasty and somewhat herbal licorice nose. Lots of dark fruits, and a sweetness that coats the palate, and this sticks with you throughout the finish. Good, loads of vanilla and candied fruits with some wood notes as well, somewhat overrated I must admit I expected a little more complexity and carbonation, and I see that in some of the other reviews, so I must not be alone on that one. owdmuller (1), Lawrence, Kansas, USA does not count | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 24, 2008 2005 Vintage on tap at brewery on 2/23/2008.
Black opaque, no head. Big aroma full of Treacle, vanilla, oak, and hints of raisins and bourbon.
Initially sweet like molasses with vanilla and burnt oak. Finish is dry with lingering raisin and licorice flavors, alcohol is barley noted.
Thick mouth feel with no carbonation. Alcohol slowly warms the belly. An acquired taste, but very good. I’d like to see more carbonation. TheEpeeist (1452), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Oct 1, 2007 12 oz handbottle. Dark brown, clear around the edges. No head. Dark chocolate cake and espresso, a little whiskey oak. Silky coffee cocoa with a trace of carb revealed in the end. Vanilla, whiskey, molasses and dark chocolate all appear en route to a dry licorice finish. Rich and bold but no harsh notes. Awesome.
