Mellow citrusy nose with malt and caramel blending in. Fruity start on the flavor, mostly citrus, but also a touch of tropical fruits and canned fruits. Low on malty flavors. Some caramel and roasted notes though. Quite thin on the body, but not watery. Citrusy finish with some hoppy bitterness.Malty sweetness in the very end. A refreshing and easy drinkable beer, typical all-nighter, but far from standing out in the crowd. And the name is a bit bragging, more suited for an imperial stout than for a session-style bitter. Rating: 5-4-5-3-11-2.8. (080720)
Bottle. It pours a clear, dark golden body, topped by a finger-thick off-white head leaving some lacings. Caramel maltyness and a gentle fruity hoppyness in the aroma. Citrus and tropical fruits too. There seems to be a touch of butterscotch too. Mostly fruity in the mouth, with orange, pears and some plum. Malty sweet in the back. Some bitterness lingering. Medium, smooth mouthfeel. Low on co2, like a casked beer that was opened yesterday. The beer slides down easily and sure doesn’t taste bad, but it somehow resembles a limonade or soda drink. | 1.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 1/5 | 3/10 | 1/5 | 3/20 | May 16, 2008 Aroma: moderate esters of rose, dandelion and aniseed hop character, earthy, nutty and slightly musty. slight sweet malt, moderate caramel, slight toastiness.
Appearance: Hazy, murky, wispy off white head.
Flavour: earthy, dandelion hop flavour that is subdued, tired malt that doesn’t have the crisp nuttiness of good bitter, slight autolysis, caramel is too dominant. lingering after-taste.
Palate: short, thin, lingering musty hop flavour and not the rounded bitterness to carry this beer. slight sourness in the end.
Overall: Tired bitter that has spent it’s best days in an unrefrigerated container going around the earth. Not infected but a really poor example of a bitter in a tired condition. worst beer I have had in a long time.
