Commercial Description:
French Broad Brewery’s interpretation of the classic UK Extra Special Bitter. A bright copper color with a complex malt palate is complemented by traditional British hops, notably East Kent Golding. French Broad has made this classic public house session beer a cult classic with its skull and crossbones artwork.

Bottle. Hazy copper with an overgrown off-white head. Glass is almost all foam on the first pour. After the foams dies off, there’s nutty and earthy notes atop spicy hops, caramel, and light toffee. Taste is caramel, pear, light melon, nuttiness, spicy hops and earthy notes. Light toffee and honey here. Body is light-medium with strong carbonation. Ends with more nutty flavors, earthy and spicy hops, and toffee.

Orange with a huge off white head. Sweet and fruity aroma with yeasty and malty notes. Flavour went the same way.

Head is too thin and the beer is too bubbly. A prune and raisin sweetness with a strong alcohol smell. Palate has a nice hoppy kick. It tastes too sweet and the hops are not strong enough to counter the sweetness. Not a good example of a ESB.

Unclear medium to orange color with a average, frothy to creamy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, dusty, moderate hoppy, light yeasty. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. [20090922]

Medium amber, decent head. Roast and caramel aroma. Flavor matched. Roast notes really shown through without going into coffee territory. Very good balancing bitterness. Quite nice for a style I am picky about.

Courtesy ChzMan. Copper/orange, white carbonation. Biscuity malt and floral, bitter, grassy hops. Dry, bitter finish. Medium body, highly carbonated, easy to drink. Nice hoppy session brew.

Eh, it’s okay. Far too much fluffy head for this style. Lots of citrus in the nose and the flavor is mostly citrus too. Light, bright, and drinkable, but that’s the extent of it.

Slightly yeasty flavor. The beer is very sweet with an orange malt nut flavoring. There is a sticky aftertaste that lingers on the tongue.
