Commercial Description:
The Ryehopper is one of the latest seasonals from French Broad. The brewers noticed a lack of rye beers in the Asheville area and wanted to fill that gap. This beer represents assistant brewer Chris Richards’ first recipe released by the brewery. The malted rye contributes both a rounded nutty and a sharp malt flavor, bridging the maltiness of the barley and the bitterness of the hops. In essence, the Ryehopper is a hoppy rye beer. Seriously, what else did you expect?

22 oz. bomber bottle. Pours a lovely deep reddish orange, with a dense tan head with excellent retention and lacing. Aroma is richly malty, spicy and sweet, with a nice balanced hop profile featuring some citrus, some pine and some floral notes, but nothing overpowering. Flavor is slightly grainy, very citrus hoppy and dry with a bitter but pleasant finish. Medium bodied with rather low, dense carbonation and a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Very good.

The best beer out of the five that I tried here. Better than Terrapin’s version. Moderate rye flavor in a crisp and drinkable pale ale. The rye adds the perfect undertones to the hops. Lightly bitter and extremely well balanced.

Draft @ the brewery. Pours a ruddy amber with nice lacing along the glass. Citrus hops mingle with the rye spiciness, a nice caramel backbone with a strong piney bitter finish. A solid hoppy rye beer. A nice balance between the rye and the hops in the aroma, with a very solid bitterness. Drying finish, medium lush carbonation.

Earthy aroma. Small creamy color head with cloudy amber body. Light, lively palate with a flavor of smokey hops and dry.

Bomber on 6/21/09. Clear copper with a big, persistant off white head and a sheeting, stringy lace. Spicy nose with caramel, some toasty grain, and hints of citrus. Nice mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation, fairly dry palate. Malty flavors give way to the spiciness of the rye, and the finish has a nice zestiness and soft bitterness.

Draft at Taco Mac. Poured a clear red/amber. Aroma is grainy with subtle hops and spice. Flavor is malty with a slightly spicy graininess. Some caramel, some malt sweetness, and some spicy hop flavors. At mid-palate there are well-balanced earthy hops and some light fruity esters. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with appropriate level of bubbles. Overall, actually a very good beer. It isn’t particularly hoppy or particularly strong with rye, but is a very pleasant, sessionable, flavorful rye ale.

Copper pour, light tan colored head that sticks around...Hop aroma with some malty caramel and nutty tones...Interesting flavor...Hoppy with some malty caramel notes then hoppy in the finish with a bit much lingering bitterness...Weird aftertaste...Like copenhagen dip (the tobacco product)...Looks good...Doesn’t taste good...Unless you like swallowing tobacco spit...
