Commercial Description:
The Ryehopper began as a fall seasonal and has now found it’s way into our regular line-up. The brewers noticed a lack of rye beers in the Asheville area and wanted to fill that gap. This beer represents assistant brewer Chris Richards’ first recipe released by the brewery. The malted rye contributes both a rounded maltines and a sharp earthy flavor, bridging the maltiness of the barley and the bitterness of the hops. In essence, the Ryehopper is a hoppy rye beer. Seriously, what else did you expect?

Copper pour, light tan colored head that sticks around...Hop aroma with some malty caramel and nutty tones...Interesting flavor...Hoppy with some malty caramel notes then hoppy in the finish with a bit much lingering bitterness...Weird aftertaste...Like copenhagen dip (the tobacco product)...Looks good...Doesn’t taste good...Unless you like swallowing tobacco spit...

I have sampled this on three occasions now, and I can honestly say this beer is best with some bottle conditioning and age. Dark hazy plum colored pour with good beige head and sticky lacing. The hops and the rye are melding quite nicely but this still has a considerable hop bite on the finish once you get past the massively dominant rye in the flavor. Pretty enjoyable actually. And typically I don’t even like rye beers!

Bomber. Clear bright copper colored, slightly off-white head. Very grainy nose and flavor. Good balance between bitterness and the rich malt body. Crisp finish. Comes across like a full bodied American-style pale ale. Nice.

On draft at Barley’s Taproom, Asheville. Poured dark copper with a scant off-white head. Sweet caramel and spicy rye flavor with a finish of bittering hops. Fairly well done.

Bottle. Poured copper with a off-white head that laces. Aroma of rye malt, light citrus hops, caramel. Taste is sweet and rye, with plenty of caramel and citrusy hop. Finish is bitter and sharp. Overall, an okay hoppy rye.

Bomber from ucusty - thanks! Clear copper with a big beige head. Sweet rye nose, caramel and orange with some earthiness. Thick foamy lace. Mildly sweet rye flavors, orange, earth and a mild tannic hit. Tasty.

An astringent and thin but overall inoffensive hopped rye.

Bomber. Hazy amber color with a thin off-white head. MIld earthy hop notes, almost iced tea-like malt notes. The taste is mild but astringently hoppy, iced tea flavor as well, with a thin body, which is disappointing since my favorite part of rye brews is the palate.

Bomber pours a lightly hazed burnished copper body with a two finger khaki head. Very sticky lacing is left on the glass. Aroma opens with pink grapefruit which quickly fades into spicy and peppery rye. Hints of pine and caramel underneath. Body is smooth and creamy. Taste has a ton of earthy and spicy rye malt. Pine and grapefruit hop notes add interest. Caramel malt backbone adds an ideal balance. I love a well done rye ale, and this one hits all the marks. Excellent!
