Pours copperish, thick off-white head.
Aroma of rye, hops up front, light malt, hints of spices and pine.
Flavor was surprisingly good. Right balance of hops and rye, and somehow the palate was nicely toasted and malty. Hints of coffee mixed with the rye, adding citrus hops in the finish.

| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Dec 18, 2009 Pours a nice dark amber, large white head. Suspiciously frothy carbonation here... Aroma is decent, lots of earthy hops, some peppery notes, and something lurking in there... First swallow, and yup, early stage infection at work. Too bad. The peppery rye and the assertive earthy hops were seeming like they were going to be nice. This thing still had a thick one inch head on it an hour later where I had abandoned it. ericandersnavy (1137), crossroads, Texas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 14, 2009 bottle thanks to emacgee. poured hazyish amber with a one finger off white head that would not go away and left tons of lace behind. aroma was florals, peach, caramel, spice, pine, and what seemed to be like a fruity piece of bubblegum. flavor was pine, spice, maybe like a green pecan bitterness on the finish. body was medium with high carbonation. not bad at all. thanks ethan. bretupdegraff (181), Fishers, Indiana, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 30, 2009 Not a bad beer at all. I would have liked a little more Hop but that is just me. Has a slight nut taste that usually offends me but this is very nice. All around a great seasonal brew! glkaiser (1172), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 29, 2009 Pours a dark copper with thin head. Exactly as advertised: nice IPA with big rye presence. To be honest, as much rye presence as one can actually get into a beer and still have it taste good. Light sweetness and spicy/floral hops to match the rye. Assertive bitter finish. Quite lovely. This was my first beer from French Broad, and I’d welcome another for sure. Teege (124), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 28, 2009 22 oz bomber from Green’s. Pours a cloudy amber. Lots of vegetal notes in the nose. Hints of greens, grass, yard plants, rye, hops, slightly floral though unfortunately a slight metallic note in there. The flavor is predominately of grape fruit hinted hops with some rye behind it. Whatever causes the metallic scent comes through a little in the flavor but not too bad. Some amber malts as well. Fairly creamy for the style. Good but not amazing. theisti (1689), Leawood, Kansas, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 28, 2009 22 oz bottle sent my way by Suttree. Pour is a slight haze copper orange with a one an off white one inch head that falls with lacing. Aroma of big grain, toasty, fresh baking multi grain bread, nice soft Rye character - very soft and full at the same time. Nice nose. Taste has the Rye up closer to the front, followed closely behind by more straightforward toasted malted barley character, transitioning back to big Rye. The taste is much more one dimensional than the nose, and really lacks the softness. The aftertaste is strong on the Rye and some bitter pine and earthy hops. Palate is medium, with normal carbonation. This was a well done Rye beer, and the assertiveness fit for what they were going for I am sure. I was hoping for a bit more softness following the nose, but it was still nice. Thanks for sending this one to me Phil, it was a fun one. StinkBall (76), Asheville, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Nov 24, 2009 Nice hoppy and fruity aroma. Great aroma. The palate is nice but doesn’t linger. This is a great tasting beer with a very dry finish. A good session choice. My favorite beer so far from French Broad River Brewing Co. frylock (1026), Buffalo, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 22, 2009 Clear golden brown topped by a thin off white head. Big rye-malt aroma accompanied by some pungent hops. Grassy and floral hop with a big lingering spicy rye flavor. Comes across as kind of harsh, but it doesn’t make for a bad beer.
