French Broad Wee Heavy-er Scotch Style Ale

(22oz bottle) Pours a brownish amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of cinnamon, roasted malt, caramel, peat, and chocolate. Flavor of caramel, roasted malt, peat, and cinnamon.

Fairly grainy aroma and flavor. The grain gives way to more malts as it warms. Pretty standard wee-heavy without a ton of flavor to it, other than the grain.

Pours a deep, clear copper with a large creamy off-white head that sticks to the glass well on the way down to a small cap. The aroma seems a little odd for a scotch ale, and is dominated a fairly nondescript smoky aroma, not really the peat I was expecting, just some smoked grains. The taste follows the aroma unfortunately and has some smoked grains and hints of caramel, though very faint. Maybe some fruit, though it’s tough to get much out of the taste. The mouithfeel is fairly thin and almost watery. I’m fairly unimpressed with this one. There just isn’t enough flavor or body to make this much more than average...if that.

Bottle. Bonus from TURDFERGUSON. Pours a deep brown. Pale malt, and slight scotch in aroma and taste. A bit of a sour taaste in there too. Perhaps its just the pale malt flavors. Not too bad.

22oz bottle. Medium to dark brown color, creamy, light tan head. Aroma of grassy hops, stale malt, and very buttery toffee. Another diacytl French Broad?? I hope not! strange and boring malt character. Overly hopped bitterness. Finishes with a hint of chocolate malt. Well, I guess if you add extra hops, or an over-abundance of bitterness come through... you can cover up ANY infected flavors. Disappointed by a bad French Broad bottle!

More of a scottish ale than a scotch ale - hazy amber - soapy lace - the nose is nutty and doughy, with some earthy characteristics, leafy character - the flavor is of semi-bitter herbs and spices up front - moderate sweetness, nutty flavors, a hint of peat, tobacco, gingerbread - there is a tiny bit of tartness and leathery character on the back end that tastes like the onset of an infection (but one of those awesome infections that makes the beer delicious and better than it was) - a tiny bit of acidity on the back amplifies this character - a bit buttery - tastes like a decent recipe, bottled with poor quality control.

22 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with GAManiac. Pours a dark brown with a moderate off-white head that lasted through three-quarters of the glass and laced the glass well. Light aroma of malt and not much else. The flavor is malt, light peat, and just a bit of brown sugar. Medium bitterness at the finish. A bit lighter in body than what I think of typically in a scotch ale.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours a dark amber with beige head. Aroma of some nuttiness, fruit, some light tartness. Flavor of some malt, some faint tart, toast, and fruit. Mouth feel is medium body with high carbonation. Overall, pretty good...
