JCB (949), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 9, 2008 On tap at the James Joyce, Durham. I’ve long enjoyed this offering from French Broad, a milder Scotch ale that doesn’t skimp on character or complexity. A nice hefty copper/brown pour with a moderate head and thick, smooth mouthfeel. The aroma on this one is more straightforwardly malty than its pumped up siblings, but it still has soft fruity notes along with some hints of winter spice - the latter come on more prominently as the beer warms. Full flavored, nice sipper. phishpond417 (1360), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA May 18, 2008 Brought back to me from Asheville. The head is just a sliver of chocolatey foam, and before i knew it- it was gone. A nice full heavy body, yet smooth and dark brown- almost black. coffee, caramel and wood. blackmurder (164), sadf, Hawaii, USA May 8, 2008 Updated: May 10, 2008Got in a bottle courtesy of a friend. Poured like a scotch ale and looked like a cross between a wolf and a malamute. DocLock (4083), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 3, 2008 Pours turbid dark brown with 1-finger khaki head. Aroma is scotch malt, spicy cinnamon, mild brown sugar and nuts. Tastes malty, brown sugary, with notes of walnut, dark chocolate, and some spicy yeast, with as medium palate heft. BlackDonald (1040), North Carolina, USA Jan 26, 2008 This has definitely got be be my favorite beer from French Broad, which is not saying very much. Lacks the complexity of some other take on this style, but still very quaffable. Creamy on the palate, slightly thin, but drinkable.
