From notes 5/9/03: Robust copper color. Rather clear. Light beige fluffy head formed and left some creamy lacing behind. A malty aroma, but very very subtle. Almost no discernible scent to detect if you’re not paying attention. A rich malty taste, nothing overly roasted or smoky. Subtley hopped at the end of the taste. Too thin for me to be a true "wee heavy", still there was some creaminess to it.

Draught at Fox & Parrot. Cloudy amber with off-white head. The aroma has some yeast and just a whiff of hops. Smooth palate. Mild hoppy flavor with a little bite to the finish. Not bad, but it lacks something. I recommend drinking it cooler than room temp.

on draught. Pours a cloudy amber shade with a whitish head. The aroma is somewhat thin and kind of yeasty. This beer has a moderate hoppiness and is overall bitter, but not overpowering in any sensation.

Draught at Tyler’s in Durham, North Carolina. Hazy light brown color with thin off-white head. Hint of malt in the nose and flavor. Some hop flavor and bitternesswith a bit of sweetness. Maybe some cherries in the backround. Decent beer.

On tap at the James Joyce pub in Durham, NC. This beer is sort of amber colored with a thin head. Malts are present in the aroma but all I could taste in the flavor was water. Very boring and weak ale. Not worth making a Wee Heavy if you can’t get the ABV where you want it.

Tap. Toasted caramel malt and brown sugar aromas. Pours reddish brown with a creamy white head and excellent creamy lacing. Creamy brown sugar and malt roasted flavors. Medium bodied and creamy palate.

My first French Broad brew. Had it on draught at Barley’s Taproom in Asheville. The commercial description says "malty, toasty, strong and sweet," but to me, the flavor of the brew was dominated by bitter hops. This is not necessarily a bad thing... but it also doesn’t necessarily make a scotch ale either. I’m finding that NC’s ABV% is beginning to limit the bredth of my beer tasting range. Hopefully the pop the cap legislation will pass the state senate.
