A decent example of the style. Rich and very malty, very earthy with some rich caramel, molasses and dark fruits, and finishes up with just a big of caramelized sugar and smokiness. Nice!

Bomber poured a clear reddish amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of carmel, molasses, earthiness and a hint of smoke. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, molasses, earthiness and a hint of smoke with a smooth lingering malty finish.

22 oz bottle. Malty, like any Scottish ale. Boring, like most Scottish ales. I’m a hop lover, not a malt lover, so this beer didn’t leave much of a lasting impression on me. Addendum: Beer did get better as it warmed.

Pours a clear amber with nice frothy tan head. Nose has toasted nuts, caramel and malt. Flavor is roasted with caramilized sugar, malt and a bit of smoke. Medium body with slight bitter finish.

Murky brown. Sharp but not heavy on the tongue. Smoky bite in the finish. Carbon dioxide bitterness seemed a bit harsh at first. Toasty malts, with only a mild sweetness of caramel and grains. Moderate bitterness. Spicy, grass-like hops had a pinch of sourness to them, adding an interesting element. Not bad, yet underwhelming.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark amber to medium brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted bread, cookie), lightly hoppy (flowers, apricot), with notes of cola, gum, clay. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation. Reasonably decent aroma, although overly bitter in the mouth with a slightly foul aftertaste. It’s ok, but I couldn’t bring myself to drink much.

On tap at the taproom at Harborside McCormimck and Schmick’s in Portland on 6/26/09. Nice caramel aroma. Sweet molasses and toffee flavor, with mild bitter finish. Wish I had better notes on this, but it was an unremarkable scottish ale.
