Beerlando (1135), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 5, 2008 2006 vintage, aged about 1 1/2 years. Pours a hazy burnt auburn color with a large, spongy, tan colored head. The foam displays good retention, leaving nice cobweb lacing on the glass. The aroma is quite hoppy, even at this age, with bold citrus notes and resinous pine layering atop and equally huge toffee malt billing. Flavors are similarly aggressive and very well balanced. Similar in hop profile to a piney, grapefruit and orange IIPA, there is just enough caramel and toffee malt to bring it into barleywine territory. The substantial body is velvety and easy to drink, hiding the 9% ABV quite well. Overall, a very solid example of a straightforward, hoppy American barleywine. JB175 (1269), Holland, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 30, 2008 Bottles from multiple sources - This one is an 06 22 oz-er. Reddish-brown pour with a medium off-white head. Aroma has a nice amount of earthy, citrusy hops with some caramel sweetness. Flavor is still hop-dominant after two years with some citrus, earth, floral-ness, plus some sweet malts. Nice feel - not bad overall, just not as well integrated in terms of flavors as I had hoped. More time or less time? Hmmm - can’t wait to re-eval this bad boy. Magic_dave6 (3476), Glasgow, Scotland Jun 25, 2008 Bottle at cgarvieuk’s preparty, without giving anything away, hehe! Aroma is bursting with american hop, piney, citrus, lychee with a big toffee malt backing. Taste is similar, pritty bitter and more of an imperial ipa than a barley wine. Good stuff and fairlyu perked me up a bit. cgarvieuk (2151), Edinburgh, Scotland Jun 25, 2008 Bottle at home Big thanks to Douglas88 for this ... Deep copper ... wee bit sweet barley wine nose with some piney hop ... But the flavour for me is not a barley wine ... little sweet ... lots of hops very bitter ... nearly undrinkable ... appreciate getting to try it but oh no... no balance... stefanje (478), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Jun 16, 2008 650 ml bottle from Bev4less.This is the 07 release. Pours a dark copper color with a big fluffy beige head. The aroma is classic barley wine with sweet malts, oranges, and rye bread. The flavor mirrors the aroma with a fair amount of biter hops thrown in for good complexity. The mouthfeel is full and smooth. The finish is long and biter. Overall: This strikes me as sort of a cross between a Barley wine and an IPA. Its very well crafted and very tasty.
