Commercial Description:
This smooth and fruity barleywine ale is a delicious brew to sip in chilly (or any) weather. Deep and robust, it is brewed using two-row Pale, Dextrin and Crystal malts, combined with flaked barley, to give it a strong malty body. Hopped with Willamette, Styrian, Goldings and Centennial hops, Old Boardhead Barleywine finishes with a pleasant hoppiness.

’07 bomber. Smooth pour into a snifter produced a good head. Lacing is very pronounced. Aroma is not especially pleasant, with a musty, wet cardboard scent predominating. The color is more inviting, a light mahogany red. No sweetness in this brew--the hops are front and center, full of citrus and pine, but not overpowering. This seemed a little less hoppy/more winey last year, but I sampled it on draft last year. I might re-rate after the Parkway Tavern’s barleywine fest next month.

Darkened amber, orange pour. Hazy. Big tan head. Very sticky lace. Pungent nose of citrus and pine, maple syrup and brown sugar. Flavor profile is strong and has a Marianas Trench like depth...pine, grapefruit, maple syrup, brown sugar, burnt cream, dry cinnamon, vanilla and ashened wood. Finishes dry... I was hoping for a sweeter finish. Biting hops on the end. Body is medium thick with good viscosity. I have a couple left...I’ll age them a bit and see what happens. Nicely done.

Bomber rating. Hazy copper pour with an average off white head. Hop forward aroma, with caramel toffee and some spices. Not as rich or deep as many in the style. Kind of has some similarities as Third Coast Old Ale, yet more watered down. Nice hop bite but too plain. I wasn’t thrilled. Luckily, the price tag on this was $3.99 which is a pretty good bomber price tag.

2007 22 oz. bottle from the most generous stefanje. Thank you Stefan! Clear dark red color with a sizeable head and good lacing. Prickly pine hops are assertive int he aroma with notes of brown sugar, cream, citrus. Taste is very strong and very dry hops, lemon, other citrus and pine. Some subtle fruitiness supports the hoppiness. Nice creamy texture and taste througout. Normally I like a nice maltiness to balance the hops, which this one lacks, but for some reason it works very well.

Bottle. Pours a reddish orange color, big cloud-like white head, plenty of lacing. Sharp dark candy aromas, candy apple, maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar; complex. Caramel starts off big in the mouth, some dark candy, maple and oak, sweet apples. Smooth body, crisp malty feel, watery smooth finish, very easy to drink, alcohol is hidden.

Sweet, simple, and bitter. Poured thin, no head, looked sad in the glass. Simple flavor, on the sweet end of barley wines. Overall just a straight forward barley wine, nothing too special.
