stefanje (544), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Jun 16, 2008 650 ml bottle from Bev4less.This is the 07 release. Pours a dark copper color with a big fluffy beige head. The aroma is classic barley wine with sweet malts, oranges, and rye bread. The flavor mirrors the aroma with a fair amount of biter hops thrown in for good complexity. The mouthfeel is full and smooth. The finish is long and biter. Overall: This strikes me as sort of a cross between a Barley wine and an IPA. Its very well crafted and very tasty.
MI2CA (1036), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Aug 29, 2008 22oz - 2006 - Thanks Crosling - Aroma has a strong bitter hop nose, caramel with an almost astringent pine resin finish. Pours transparent copper with a medium head and great lacing. Flavor is a lot more caramel and a lot less pine resin than aroma. Hops are still there 2 years later. Some fruit and spice thrown in but I can’t pinpoint them. Palate is sticky and tart. Not groundbreaking, but tasty nonetheless. BelgianBeerGal (892), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Aug 29, 2008 2007 bottle. Pours a ruby brown colour with a big, foamy tan head and sticky lacing. HUGE hoppy aroma that starts sweet and bitters out. Same flow with the flavour, very hoppy taste that finished with grapfruit rind and pine resin. The aftertase reminds me of gin and juniper berries. Not really my favourite BW, maybe it needs a year or 2 more to mellow. radiomgb (1749), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Aug 23, 2008 Deep ruby in colour with a thin beige coloured head, light lacing. The aroma is sweet with some caramel malts, light alcohol, apples and plums. The flavour is sweet, fruity, some plums, light malt and small amounts of alcohol. Sweet mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium carbonation. FInishes a bit quick with some alcohol.
The alcohol was never overpowering but 7 years in the bottle probably had something to do with this. The body is suffering and this probably peaked 3 years ago.
