Aroma is wonderful, with caramel, sweet malt and a nice smooth bourbon. Taste doesn’t quite pack the punch of the smell. I get roasted malt with caramel and toffee notes. The malt is a little off, as there’s some bitterness that kind of comes in waves. It’s hard to describe, but it’s not as smooth as it should be. This is pleasant to drink and nice and creamy. I wasn’t super-excited to pull this out of the cellar, but it exceeded my expectations. nick76 (2646), Tampa, Florida, USA

The appearance is amber with a large foamy head. The flavor is like the aroma with a bitter sweet finish. The palate is OK for the style. Overall a good beer but not great. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 24, 2009 Bottle. Clear deep amber body with a nice creamy tan head. Lots of malt in aroma with some nutty character. Notes of caramel and dark fruits but also some rotten vegetable. Heavy malty flavour with lots of caramel and a little smoke. Lovely creamy palate. Great flavor with a very yeasty, nutty finish. An incredibly original and complex brew. Really dug it. PJClarke (620), London, Greater London, England
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Apr 8, 2009 From a bottle at the brewery tap:
Deep brown with a lovely head.
Cow manure and deep blue cheese notes. Some light freshness in the form of rustic pears.
Rich and boozy, barnyards and Gruyere in the mouth.
Thin and a bit of a strange one this. I wouldn’t necessarily choose to have it again. MitchWayne (264), Kokkola, Finland

Can’t see any reason for it, this is one of the most consistent british ales around. Fruits and nuts in the aroma, dry nutty hoppy taste with some sweetness thrown in. Works for me and was one of the first good things I tasted that got me into beer in the first place.
