16.9 oz bottle 3/7/09 (Sam’s Wine & Spirits-Downers Grove)-Pours a darker amber body with a huge off white head which emits an aroma of malt, caramel, and sweetness. Taste of sweetness, malt, and brown sugar. This medium to full bodied brew is rather tasty and quite drinkable.

Pours with a darkish thin head. A dark copper brown colour. Very nice aroma, caramel sweetness which carries through to the pleasant bitter taste. Crisp on the palate and very slightly carbonated.

Bottle. Pours with a large, cratered, off-white head over a clear mahogany body. Good lace. Aroma of honey, dough, bready, raisins, cinnamon and other spices. Taste is slightly bitter, burnt malt, long duration that involves caramel, bread and dried fruit. Biscuity in the finish. Watery mouthfeel, light bubbles.

So, rating this beer requires that I make a distinction between the bold punch of flavors that characterize the American Ale category, and the balanced subtle charachter of the english and scotish ales. Fuller’s did a brilliant job. The aroma is muted, but wafts of sweet bread and figgy pudding. It pours into my tulip beer glass with a deep red-amber hue, and a think, frothy head. The head persists throughout the drinking of the beer, and laces the glass nicely. Flavor is sweet spices and Christmas. Very nice sweet up front, and a balanced smoothness down the hatch. The mouthfeel is exactly as expected, full rich filling, but not milkshake. As this ale is bottle conditioned, the carbonation is soft. This beer got better as it warmed in the glass. Drink it at 50 degrees. Super English Ale.

(bottle) Amber colour with yeast particles and a beige, medium-sized foamy head. Sweet and toasted malty aroma with caramel, subtle fruity notes (elderberries) and a touch of woody and spicy hops. Bitter and slightly sweet flavour, full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Toasty malt-character with caramel, licorice and subtle fruity notes, backed by spicy and woody hops.. Almost dry, slightly burnt bitter and sweet finish with gentle woody hoppy notes. Extremely rounded and flavourful strong Ale (22.II.09).
