evanrail (41), Prague, Czech Republic Feb 2, 2009 From the bottle. It pours clear deep amber with a mousse-like, creamy head. Syrupy, fruity notes in the nose. In the mouth, it is full and malty without being cloying or overly sweet, and each mouthful serves up complex tannic, leathery bitterness with an interesting grassy breath to the finish. A delicious light sourness closes out the gulp, inviting another (and many more). Excellent. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Feb 1, 2009 In short: An exemplary English Strong Ale. Big but smooth fruity maltiness, almost no hops presence and highly drinkable. Very good
How: Bottle. Consumed relatively fresh two months after purchase
The look: Clear amber-ruby body topped by a medium beige head
In long: As with most typical English strong ale this beer is all malts with little hops presence. Toffee, caramel, dark fruits (raisins, figs, etc.), molasses, grape juice, wild berries, etc. Finish is all fruits with almost no bitterness. Despite the little hops presence the beer doesn’t feel really sweet. This is a rich and smooth English strong ale. Nothing original but this beer is highly drinkable. Body is unexpectedly thin yet the beer feels really nourishing. First brewed in 1995 for the 150th anniversary of the brewery reminding us that the English have been brewing good beers for over 150 years but have yet to learn to cook a half-decent meal. basewars (144), Albany, New York, USA Feb 1, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark redish brown with plenty of off-white head. Floral aroma balanced nicely by sweet malt. Flavor is sweet fruitiness with a dry hoppy finish. Full bodied. Nice beer. Very smooth. jkwalking05 (1483), Arlington, Texas, USA Jan 30, 2009 Looks and acts like a quality ale. Bitter but not overpowering. Good contrast creates a beer that is full but is still malty and mellow at the same time.
altonbrownd (1862), Amsterdam, Netherlands Jan 24, 2009 Bottle in London. Dark red body. Hoppy nose. Taste of fruits, hops, chocolate. Quite strong and warming. Gary (352), Buckinghamshire, England Jan 22, 2009 Updated: Apr 18, 2009I first drank this 5 years ago when I was 22 & everyone told me this was "old man beer". Be that as it may ,its a bottle conditioned beer that I dig ,even if it lacks street creed. Basicaly its a rich, powerful malt driven beer. You get interesting flavours poping out of the glass , like burnt toast and nuttiness -with chocolate ,all wraped up in a syrupy palate. Floral in there .Always a good’un. kiwibt (51), , New Zealand Jan 18, 2009 Bottle conditioned, BB20/05/10
