Cryotek (206), Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA Dec 29, 2007 An ale that has simularities of a stout. A very good beer, something i could have at a bar, with food, and bold enough to stand out in a tasting. Golden amber color. Sweet, maybe a tiny hint of coco and citrus flavors. A little dry, hoppy taste, maybe the yeast i’m tasting. Tastes of nut and caramel are also slightly noticeable. No one ingredient stands out, but together it forms a great beer! Definitely a standard of the style and recommended. mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 29, 2007 [760-20071013] Bottle (w/ jerc). Boozy chocolate malt aroma. Clear, dark brown amber body with a long-lasting foamy light tan head. Boozy malt flavour has a bit of a vegetable background. Medium body. Nice malty brew. Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Dec 28, 2007 THOUGHTS: A nice British beer. Not bad, but nothing memorable. Aroma seems nice but weak. But for some reason I truly believe this is something that people were really drinking in the 19th century.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium red with a small, creamy, off-white head that mostly diminished but left good lacing. The aroma was light to moderate malt, light to moderate herbal hops, lightly yeasty with sweet fruit. Nice but weak. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter and acidic, while the finish was moderately sweet, lightly acidic and moderately to heavily bitter with and average duration. The flavor was a little malty with a little fruitiness that switches to herbal hops in the finish. Nice balance but seems a little watered down. The medium body was sort of oily with lightly fizzy carbonation and a metallic finish. nramsburg (200), New York, New York, USA Dec 27, 2007 Great dark amber color with a balanced hop nose. Fairly bitter on the palate, slightly nutty. Really great beer, but slightly overpriced at roughly 5 for a 16 ounce size at the local whole foods. BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA Dec 26, 2007 500ml Bottle - Eastside Club Tavern - Olympia, WA
Aroma – Rich malt aroma with a hint of hops.
Appearance – Amber in color, Clear with a Nice fluffy head.
Flavor – A good easy drinking beer the malts and hops where light in flavor.
Palate – Nice Mouthfeel, good texture with a dry finish.
Overall – A decent Strong English beer this was needing more hops and to be even more bitter this was a tad under the radar as being real good. Maybe a lot better off the keg.
UCLABruin (34), Los Angeles, California, USA Dec 26, 2007 Pours ruby brown with a thick lasting cream head that leaves traces on the glass. Aroma is malt, coffee, and slight caramel. Taste is malt and coffee, with a rich thick body. Very nice. ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Dec 23, 2007 Updated: Feb 18, 2008I am a huge fullers fan. I have liked every one of there beers. This was no exception. Pours an amber orange color with a small fizzy head. Smells like caramel, some dark fruit, sugar, and a bit of amber malt. Mouth feel is soft and taste is sweet semi spicy and malty. Great beer. TheJester (694), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Dec 23, 2007 500 mL bottle. (Best before 09/07/09). Chestnut brown with a decent head. The aroma is malty-sweet with candied fruit and a little alcohol thrown in. It does not taste as sweet as it smells; it is actually nicely bitter. There is a spiciness to this beer, and the alcohol is very well hidden. At its best at cellar temp or above. Good beer, and I can see how it could continue to improve with age.
