But for some reason I truly believe this is something that people were really drinking in the 19th century.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium red with a small, creamy, off-white head that mostly diminished but left good lacing. The aroma was light to moderate malt, light to moderate herbal hops, lightly yeasty with sweet fruit. Nice but weak. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter and acidic, while the finish was moderately sweet, lightly acidic and moderately to heavily bitter with and average duration. The flavor was a little malty with a little fruitiness that switches to herbal hops in the finish. Nice balance but seems a little watered down. The medium body was sort of oily with lightly fizzy carbonation and a metallic finish. nramsburg (200), New York, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 27, 2007 Great dark amber color with a balanced hop nose. Fairly bitter on the palate, slightly nutty. Really great beer, but slightly overpriced at roughly 5 for a 16 ounce size at the local whole foods. BrewDad (2366), Olympia, Washington, USA

Aroma – Rich malt aroma with a hint of hops.
Appearance – Amber in color, Clear with a Nice fluffy head.
Flavor – A good easy drinking beer the malts and hops where light in flavor.
Palate – Nice Mouthfeel, good texture with a dry finish.
Overall – A decent Strong English beer this was needing more hops and to be even more bitter this was a tad under the radar as being real good. Maybe a lot better off the keg.

This was no exception. Pours an amber orange color with a small fizzy head. Smells like caramel, some dark fruit, sugar, and a bit of amber malt. Mouth feel is soft and taste is sweet semi spicy and malty. Great beer. TheJester (702), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 23, 2007 500 mL bottle. (Best before 09/07/09). Chestnut brown with a decent head. The aroma is malty-sweet with candied fruit and a little alcohol thrown in. It does not taste as sweet as it smells; it is actually nicely bitter. There is a spiciness to this beer, and the alcohol is very well hidden. At its best at cellar temp or above. Good beer, and I can see how it could continue to improve with age. cyrenaica (440), Milton, Ontario, Canada

I tried this beer on November 2, 2007 after purchasing from my local LCBO outlet. The beer poured a translucent reddish brown colour with a generous tan coloured head which dissipated into little foam islands on the top of the beer. The aroma is malty with some hints of fruit tones and cloves. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a little carbonation, and some bitterness. The flavour is mainly malty, a little licorice, and a little bitterness. wxman (585), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 19, 2007 Pours a dark amber with a thick, small bead, off-white head that doesn’t go away. Aroma is bread dough and freshly mown grass. Taste is quite good and well balanced. Rich malty sweetness subdued by mild hop bitterness. Maple syrup, caramel, licorice, and even a little grapefruit are all present. I like!
