This was a birthday gift to myself; I’d heard how good this was and was anxious to try it. I wasn’t disappointed. The bottle and label are simple and very handsome, in a traditional English style. It poured with a thin but pretty off-white head that left fair lacing. The color was a lovely reddish copper-amber. The aroma was rich and quite strong, with obvious hop bitterness and some sweet, fruity notes beneath. The frutiness comes through more strongly from the bottle than a glass. The flavor was even richer than the aroma, quite bitter and just on the edge of too hoppy for me, but with each sip more of the smokiness and malt came through. It was a real challenge to my low-hops tastebuds, but it really grew on me. The tail was pretty smooth, with a noticeable but pleasant bitterness at the end. The alcohol kick is strong. In fact, this is a strong beer in every sense. That very strength can be a bit overwhelming, and I am not sure that I really like it as well as the Fuller’s ESB. But this is a great beer nonetheless, even if one a night is all I could handle. Another triumph by Fuller’s.

Silly ratebeer lost my rate. Let’s try this again, unfortunately from memory. Nice dark redish brown pour with a thick lacey head. Bready aroma. Some malts. Deep chocolaty taste, warm, spicey. Sweetish finish. Reminds me a bit of a chocolat stout. Rather nice, I like this more then any other fullers I have had and that’s saying a lot.

Bottle. Very nice dark honey red, poured with a surprising hefty head, three fingers. Very well carbonated for a bottle conditioned ale (never had any luck with that). Very malty, smells hoppier than it really is. Very well balanced beer. Would have been an instant favorite had it had a higher ABV.

Bottle. Copper/red color with an off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, sweet fruit, toffee, blackcurrant, caramel, citrus, spice and some yeast. Tastes of sweet and roasted malt, toffee, fruit, spices, marzipan, nuts, citrus and bread. Complex. Good balance between sweet malts and bitter hops. A bit strong in alcohol but still smooth and highly drinkable.

Good strong hop smell that means business. Looks like a full bodied ale. Pours with a decent head. Strong, smooth malt flavour and after taste.

Pours a dark honey ruby with good head. Bitter hops with a distincive wood and burnt sugar flavour. Dry finish with a hint of cream.
