500ml bottle - pours deep amber with a thick off-white head. Almost nitro’ish in appearance. Aroma is Goldings hops, spice, some fruit, delicately sweet malt. Flavour is big and wonderful. Lots of spice, cake, fruit, some chocolate notes, dry bitter finish. Very complex, lots going on. Great beer. Very warming and soft in the mouth.

Originally received a 4.35 from me on 9/16/03. Rich amber color, subtle haze. Heavy maltiness with a dry English hop character. A sipper, a warmer, and a nice bittered ale.

Bottle (presant from Mikkel) in train (x2000) going to Stockholm for the Beer & Whiskey Festival, shopping and visiting good beerbars (Akkurat). Clear red/brown - offwhite head. High malty, raisins, barley, berries, red berries, cookies, high sweetness, Caramel, sweet malty. Far too sweet. Dry hoppy finish.

Smells citrusy and sweet, almost too much so. It is cloudy out of the bottle, but this might be because at checkout they handed it to my sidways after inverting the bottle. Tastes crisp, spicy, caramel and yet very sweet with a lingering after taste. Its very close to the traditional ale bitterness and complexity that you find in small village breweries, but not quite. The usual creaminess and mouthful seems to be missing.

500 ml bottle from LCBO, served cold in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear, deep copper with an orange-tan head Aroma: Marmalade on rye bread – lots of deep grapefruity, citrusy hops with some piney notes, lots of caramel, toffee and dark rye bread crust; some dark dried fruits and warm spices come through as it warms; delicious. Palate: Medium-full body, medium but somewhat sharp and fine effervescence. Flav.: Much like the nose – plenty of juicy, grapefruit/pine hops, dark rye bread crust, burnt sugar, some caramel/toffee; some warm spices, dried fruits and ginger as it warms; a little off-dry with a solid bitter finish.

Lovely stuff.

Tasted again Nov. 06/08.
500 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. 2008 “edition”.

App.: Clear deep copper with a fair tight tan head. Aroma: Lots of fruits – cherries, tree fruits, dried fruits, molasses, licorice, quite sweet, brown sugar, a little alcohol, a touch of wood. Palate: Medium+ body, soft carbonation, smooth. Flav.: More brown sugar, deep caramel and toffee and less fruit than the nose, still some molasses and slightly minty herbal notes, a bit of earthy hops; a little sweet with some bitterness; leaves a light burnt sugar finish.

Still nice stuff.

Pours a bold brown brew with a hardy white head. Aroma is strong of fruit and alcohol. Taste is smooth, some malt and hops are balanced finely. A very good beer from one of my favourite brewers.
