Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Aug 27, 2006 500 ML bottle. All malts in this one, with nary a hop making an appearance. Incredible toffee aroma. Lots of bitterness. thornecb (1736), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Aug 26, 2006 Best before 20 June 06. Pours deep brown into an English pint. Micro head with excellent staying power leaves significant lacing as it slowly recedes. Dried fruit and nutmeg notes. Creamy raisin and date up front with a lasting bitter spice finish. dornoy (679), Lyngby, Denmark Aug 26, 2006 Light brown-beige head on a dark redbrown body. Nice aroma. This breww has hints of dark fruits, such ad rasberry and grapes, also a little chocolate. Very filling, and a good mate to heavy food. bigcat03 (191), Lincoln, Nebraska, USA Aug 24, 2006 1 pint .9 ounce bottle from Hy-Vee Liquors St. Joe poured into english pint - Pours dark brown with a 1.5 finger, light beige head; Malt, some milk chocolate, grapes, raspberry, apple, among other fruits, and a sweet flower to the nose; Some grapes, and taste of aple juice, yeast, but not much on the initial taste; Maybe the yeast was overpowering everything? A roasty, slightly hoppy, bread crusty backtaste; Palate on the whole was kind of average and the alcohol left a slight sting...strange for just a 6.3 ABV. The aroma was great but the beer as a whole left something to be desired. This bottle might have been past it’s prime though, so I shall revisit. CharlesDarwin (1823), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA Aug 19, 2006 500 mL Bottle. Aroma plunges forth into the vapid air, with a pungent blast of oats, grain and fruit earth. Berry bushes bloom, wheat ripens, and my grandmother makes caramel with grapefruit juice. Sweet and seductive. Light lemony edges indicating possible hop presence. Volatile and lightly hot, which is surprising for the percentage. Stunning clear pour of ruddied candied apple caramel with fringes of fire and gold. Rim of silky white cashmere strings. Flavor is a rich, yet somewhat thin around the edges, run of malt sugars and caramels. Fruit sugars, of plum and cherry slide down a waterfall of cream, with handfulls of barley husks and leeching Kent Goldings. I’m finding the hops out of balance here actually. They come on too soon and too dry. I will admit my palate has been sensitive to bitter lately, but this still seems out of range. The body is a little watery and reminds me of the bottom of a gin and tonic with lemon, with only a dram seeping through the ice cubes, thus coming out less potent. At the smack, grassy notes prevail. I can really feel out the Kent Goldings, with astonishing breadth, but I can almost feel that planty texture and it’s a little upsetting. Some far away sherry notes are first on the tongue. In the background a light wash of roast. Plum stems and apricot skins smack. Decent, but hopfully unbalanced and a little thin bodied in my perception. cheeta (858), Langå, Denmark Aug 19, 2006 Moderate malty aroma. Huge creamy off-white head. Excellent lasing head. Mostly lasting longevity. Cloudy brown body. Heavy bitter initial flavor. Medium to full palate. Oily texture. YK23 (253), Haifa, Israel Aug 18, 2006 Bottle at GBBF 06’: great beer, very malty, very rich, full bodied, lots of dried fruits, some spices, roasted flavor all the way through and great hoppiness along side that which leads to a great bitterness. very recommended. Yeahitsnolan (51), Bakersfield, California, USA Aug 14, 2006 Very nice beer. Very nice deep color with a off white head. Full of deep flavors of malt and chocolate. Very smooth with a nice bitter finish. WILL buy again.
