mcnally (114), Burbank, California, USA Jun 11, 2006 Bottle. Medium brown color with nice foamy off-white head. Great tasting beer- combination of caramel, roasted flavors, and hops. Excellent! OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA Jun 11, 2006 500ml Bottle pours brown with a short creamy offwhite head. Aromas of caramle, roasted malts, and a bit of raisins. Flavor is nice caramel sweetness, raisins, roasted malts, a little bit of nutty, and earthy flavor as well. Palate is medium bodied and creamy smooth. Somewhat dry on the finish with a small amount of hops. Easy to drink and pretty tasty. M0RHI (1067), Luxembourg, Luxembourg Jun 9, 2006 Light ruby red, with a large foamy head, light brown, laced well. Nose has ome sweet malts there, maybe some sour milk. Taste is some hops, malty, caramel sweetness. Long bitter aftertaste, hoppy and dry. mynie (44), Waterloo, Iowa, USA Jun 6, 2006 Pretty red with different shades in different lights, good, retentive white head. Really nice pour, actually.
Smells like deep caramel and raisins. Smells like a good beer that’s slightly spoiled, but the label says it’s good for another month...
Very strong, very sweet. Heavy duty alcohol, raisins, caramel, solid sweet malt, and a good dry hop background.
These English strong ales are an odd sort. As hard to drink as 11.00 ABV beers, only half as strong. reebtogi (77), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 5, 2006 pours a nice amber colour with a nice foamy tan head. Has a nice malty taste not common to English ales. A mild hoppiness and aroma. I really enjoyed this beer. eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 3, 2006 Reminded me of the Black Sheep beer I had. Poured a ruby-brown color with a normal head that didn’t last long. Lacing was minimal but present. Flavor was fairly sweet with a nice hoppy finish (not overdone, but not really balanced, as malt sweetness overpowered the hops). Something else was there in the malt, but I couldn’t figure it out. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA May 31, 2006 (500 ml bottle: $3.99 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) I’ve let this age in my darkened, cool bedroom for many months, long enough that I’ve exceeded the supposed Best By date of 06-Jan-06 by four months. No matter, this flavorful English ale is delicious. Malty, roasty, chocolaty, and lightly smoky, but balanced by a moderate hop bitterness that makes its presence known in the crisp finish and then remains on the palate for the rest of the session. For an English beer that’s seen this much aging, I’m pretty impressed by how much bite the hops has retained. While the malty and chocolaty nose is reasonably aromatic, it really doesn’t compare to the flavor, not even in enjoyment. Medium-full bodied with a nice, round mouthfeel and playful carbonation. Dark amber in color and fairly cloudy, but there is still a good amount of muddy sediment remaining in the bottle. The tall, beige head shows exceptional retention, never dipping below a quarter inch, and it deposits a thick, dense blanket of foamy lace on the glass. There used to be a time when I didn’t care for this beer (okay, it was relatively soon after I started drinking "good" beer), so I haven’t bought any since then. I’ve really been missing out because this is an excellent beer. Glad to have rediscovered it. spporras (260), Finland May 27, 2006 Updated: Jan 31, 2007(Bottle BB 03/07/08) Fruity, caramel, port wineous, slightly roasted and licorice aroma. Red brown colour, slightly hazy (no sediment) and average size, creamy, light brown, slightly lasting head with fair lacing. Fruity, caramel, slightly bitter, slightly roasted and slightly licorice flavour. Softly carbonated, sticky, dry and medium to full-bodied palate. Delicious brew! 19/01/07 (original rating was 7/4/7/4/15)
