Big fruit cake aroma. Complex malt character. Light caramel, toast, toffee, nutmeg, with some oak. Flavor is deep earthiness, green hop bitterness, hidden malt sweetness is placed second in flavor to the hop. Finishes with a hint of chocolate malt. this beer is the cured for tghe common cold, when an Imperial Stout is not available. Cheers. Drew (2409), Kent, Ohio, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 24, 2005 Bottle: Deep amber, coppery tone, moderate off-white frothy head, fairly nice lacing, slight carbonation. Musty malt aroma, slight cereal or biscuit. Quite biscuity, malty, with a slight astringent or medicinal tinge. Moderate body and mouthfeel. Needs to be bigger, thicker. This one was dated Best before Jan 6 of 2006. Malty finish, slight hop emergence, again biscuity, but overall it seems fairly light for an English Strong Ale. This one seemed to be lacking in all the fruit cake or spices. Decent, but not what I was expecting. May revisit again.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 19, 2002 Very interesting beer. More subtle, I think, than the ESB. Where the ESB hits you with it’s full chewy maltiness, the maltiness in this beer is more subdued and you’re actually slammed by the bitterness the first couple of sips. As you get used to the bitterness, you’ll start to notice the sweet maltiness (although this is still more subdued than in the ESB) A little later especially after the beer warms up, you’ll start to notice some toffee notes starting to mix with the maltiness and slightly citric bitterness. I even noticed the occasional slight hint of banana, but I’m not sure if I wasn’t just tasting things. dkachur (2373), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Aroma – Rich malt aroma with a hint of hops.
Appearance – Amber in color, Clear with a Nice fluffy head.
Flavor – A good easy drinking beer the malts and hops where light in flavor.
Palate – Nice Mouthfeel, good texture with a dry finish.
Overall – A decent Strong English beer this was needing more hops and to be even more bitter this was a tad under the radar as being real good. Maybe a lot better off the keg.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 3, 2006 Reminded me of the Black Sheep beer I had. Poured a ruby-brown color with a normal head that didn’t last long. Lacing was minimal but present. Flavor was fairly sweet with a nice hoppy finish (not overdone, but not really balanced, as malt sweetness overpowered the hops). Something else was there in the malt, but I couldn’t figure it out.
