Malty, caramelly, nutty, toasty, woody and yeasty aroma with hint of almonds. Rich malty flavor with plenty of dark caramel and fruity esters. Woody, caramelly, nutty and bitter finish. Very pleasant, excellent winter warmer! jazz88 (2239), San Francisco, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 16, 2002 Bottle. A nice head that lasted the entire glass. Somewhat dry with a quick finish. A classic british style beer - very enjoyable. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 29, 2004 Appearance: dark, nigh-impenetrable amber hue, with a big, creamy head.
Aroma: potent hoppiness, toasty and nutty, simmering with fruit notes, too. An admirable amount of complexity to be found in this nose, and it just gets spicier and fruitier as we drink it in.
Taste: magnificent mouthfeel, warm, generous, almost dazzling. Doesn’t feel too "strong", but it does have a touch of the "old" about it, the first sip lets you know you’re tasting a legendary brew. Those flavors detected in the nose, noted above, all return and make merry in the mouth, gleefully ringing the senses with a most exceptional taste. Sweet, lively, sharp, distinct, full of tasty hops, richly resounding with a sparkling, coppery flavor. Medium-bodied, with full in the finish. There’s a Hell of a lot going on in this beer, and it’s quite an enjoyable libation, undoubtedly Fuller’s finest!

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 25, 2004 Tawny brown slightly hazy body with a tan coloured head. Agree with the fruitcake aroma. Big malt flavour which is a bit too much for my liking. Some caramel and some bitterness. Alcohol was present but not offensive. It got better as it went down. Kinz (2220), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 10, 2007 After consuming the Cropton’s, this was a welcome reminder of just how good an English Strong Ale can be. Aroma of caramel. Flavor is a match, but it is a wonderfully deep, exotic, lush, rich caramel, with a faint note of fudge ripple running through it. A bit of bitterness on the finish dries things out nicely, keeping it from getting cloying. Really a great beer. DYCSoccer17 (2201), Davis, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 26, 2004 Bottle. Aroma is sweet and sugary. Very reminiscent of honey. Vinous notes as of a barleywine. Very hazy amber color with lots of floating yeasts. Off-white head. Caramels, honies, roasted malts, chocolates, vinous characters, oh my! Dry, roasty finish. Quite a lot going on, unfortunately this is thin and a little dry for my liking. willblake (2191), Belcamp, Maryland, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 20, 2004 Bottle. 04.19.04. Pour is a tarnished brass, highlighted in amber tones. The head is huge and brainy, eggshell. Aromas are of sweet malts, cakey (?), slight spicey bitterness, coriander. The flavors have similar notes. As with the last beer tonight, I am noting a distinct salt flavor. (Is my palate corrupted today?) The finish tends towards cream, butter, sugared fruits. It's not such distinct beer, but it is evidently well-crafted. An interesting example. blutt59 (2174), Dallas, Texas, USA
