Looks really nice in the glass, frothy brown head on top of a sparkling ruby liquid. Good balanced flavors. Balanced hops and malt flavors. Tastes a bit like a stronger version of the Fuller's ESB. An intersting sour and cinnamon flavor develops on the palate after the swallow. iowaherkeye (1885), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 5, 2007 16.9oz bottle, Best Before 05/Feb/09.Clear orange with some reddish highlights and a 2 finger light yellowish white head, good retention. Fruity aroma of prunes, raisins, and cherries to go along with toasty malts and caramel. Flavor follows with some light stale roasted notes to go along with the fruits and an earthy bitter (3-4 out of 10) dry finish. Medium body with low to moderate carbonation. | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Feb 5, 2007 Updated: Mar 28, 2009Had bottle of this beer in Cambridge, UK in Dec 2006. Clear copper-ruby with a one-finger head that leaves a nice frosting. Aroma of spicy toffee cake with orange zest. Flavor is earthy caramel with orange, toasted nut, and some spicy apple and wood. Just enough roast to give a nice coffee-cocoa, orange and oak aftertaste. Medium body is smooth, slightly watery in a good-drinkable way and has a dry finish. The best British beer I found in two weeks in England! Apr 2008 update: bottle purchased in Atlanta, even better than I remembered, upped from 4.2 to 4.6 stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 31, 2007 Bottle sampled. Pours brown with red edges, and a decent size light tan head. Aroma of fruit, caramel, nuts, and hops. The flavor is caramel, nuts, slight fruit, and finishes dry. Good brew. TheGrandMaster (1877), Auckland, New Zealand
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 11, 2006 Poured from the bottle, brown with a ruby tint and a full and slightly rocky brownish head. The malty aroma is strong, with some molasses and tobacco. An unexpected bitter flavour roasted malt with some fruits there too. The sharp tangy finish is the only indication of its strength. Very nice and well worth its rating. JoeM500 (1876), Chicago (little italy), Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 14, 2002 Thick, creamy, and complex! Dark unpolished bronze color with a tall rocky head. Nose is bready with hints of fruit and spice. Rich mouthfull that let me stroll through the ingredient list. Superb caramel maltiness gives way to soft cookie dough, then the bitter end leaves you with hints of hops and spices. A wonderful experience! BeerLimey (1873), California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 20, 2001 Excellent complex flavor and aroma, typified by yeast, fruit, with dry bitter finish. Especially complex for an English ale. CharlesDarwin (1867), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 19, 2006 500 mL Bottle. Aroma plunges forth into the vapid air, with a pungent blast of oats, grain and fruit earth. Berry bushes bloom, wheat ripens, and my grandmother makes caramel with grapefruit juice. Sweet and seductive. Light lemony edges indicating possible hop presence. Volatile and lightly hot, which is surprising for the percentage. Stunning clear pour of ruddied candied apple caramel with fringes of fire and gold. Rim of silky white cashmere strings. Flavor is a rich, yet somewhat thin around the edges, run of malt sugars and caramels. Fruit sugars, of plum and cherry slide down a waterfall of cream, with handfulls of barley husks and leeching Kent Goldings. I’m finding the hops out of balance here actually. They come on too soon and too dry. I will admit my palate has been sensitive to bitter lately, but this still seems out of range. The body is a little watery and reminds me of the bottom of a gin and tonic with lemon, with only a dram seeping through the ice cubes, thus coming out less potent. At the smack, grassy notes prevail. I can really feel out the Kent Goldings, with astonishing breadth, but I can almost feel that planty texture and it’s a little upsetting. Some far away sherry notes are first on the tongue. In the background a light wash of roast. Plum stems and apricot skins smack. Decent, but hopfully unbalanced and a little thin bodied in my perception.
