aroma of malt, somewhat sour, not pleasant. Pours a perfect dark amber with large tan head. Great balance of strong hop and malt with long finishing bitter taste. Palate is a little thin and losses carbonation fast.

500ml bottle at The White Horse, Parson’s Green, 27th July 2007. This is superb barley wine. The aroma sets the scene with a rich barley malt aroma and hints of other warming flavours (it made me think of old-fashioned cough sweets!) The dark red amber appearance just says ’rich’ and the taste does not disappoiht. Lots of spicy fruit cake flavours against a background of balanced malt and hops. The palate is suitably full and long lasting, with the warming alcohol coming through to just the right degree. Cask - sampled on St. George’s Day 2008 at the Prince Albert, Strawberry Hill. Very similar to the bottled version (equally good!) and I scored it the same.

Slightly cloudy deep orange red. Aroma of malt and a licorice kind of fruity aroma. Flavor profile does a sort of "hops first" attack on the tongue, and then follows with a sweet, lingering maltiness that lasts nicely. This stuff is well made and delicious.

Bottle conditioned 1pint 2.6 ounce brown bottle, back label says "best before Sept 02" had sitting since early Aug. 02 Color is a nice hazy dark brown with a deep dark orangy glow. Finger high head of creamy foam, tannish in hue, big bubbles and lumpy from a vigorous pour, has some spotty lacing. Smell is all caramel; sweet and candied toffee aroma and loads of caramel with notes of slight dark fruit and fresh bread. Hint of alcohol late and deep. Taste is super smooth caramel malt, subdued in its subtle sweetness, balanced in with the perfect amount of earthy hop twinged bite and bitterness, and slightly drying. The hops start to make a bigger appearance and gets more noticeable as you go. Feel is solid medium bodied, slightly buttery and chewy, all soothingly smooth with a nice calming earthy dryness in the finish. Lending this barleywine to be incredibly delicious and drinkable, very enjoyable and head swimmingly soothing. Made for a great night cap.... now I know I'll get some sleep. Finishing the big bottle goes right to your head. Wow.

A huge head greeted me upon pouring this beer. The foam is light tan and the body is the color of dark honey. Waiting on the head to subside is misery because the beer looks so inviting. Aroma is very malty with fruit and coffee. Flavor is loaded with malt and bitterness. It is a delicious beer and provides more warming than the 6.3% ABV should. As well as malt there are lots of dark fruit, toffee, and spice flavors. This is a nice looking, smooth, flavorful, great smelling beer. What more should be said?

Aroma is filled with candied fruits. Flavor is rich on the entry, but seems thin on the finish. Still, it’s quite pleasant to drink.

Gorgeous ruby pour. I don’t use the word gorgeous lightly, and it most certain applies in this case. Heavy smell. Loads of plum, fig and raisins on the nose. Some sweet notes of grape juice as well. Lovely. Dry mouthfeel that carries a chalky taste of dark fruit. Has a dried fruit taste, as of freeze dried fruit and trail mix. After taste has a little taste of roasted malt but not much. This is pretty good.
