Bottle. A solid year past the "best consumed before date". I don’t think it made any difference... because it tasted unbelievable. Strong roast malt and maple flavor with great balanced hop bitterness to off set sweetness. For a style that hasn’t impressed me previously, this is beyond my expectations. Will have 1845 again.

deep copper color with a light tan head. earthy malt aroma, rutabaga-like hoppy aroma too. flavor is dry malt and bitter hops, some sweetness from the malt depth but also earthy and root-vegetable like.

A delightful brew. Nearly perfect bitter hop/roasted malt balance. Head is initially frothy. Color is a deep amber hue. Finish is fruity. Definitely the best English Strong that I have ever had out of a bottle.

This beer had a best before date of 12-10-01 so I don’t know if I had the most fresh of samples. But anyways, it poured a deep cloudy reddish color with a thick white head. The flavor was balanced with just a hint of metallic/acidic taste. I think this is due to the fact that the bottle might have been a bit old. I am going to try this again and re-rate/

One of the most beautiful beers I've ever seen. Deep, deep red color. Thick, slightly reddish head leaves sheets of lace for the whole glass. Fruity malt aroma. Front is slightly sweet. Flavors of apple, caramel, and alcohol become more pronounced as the beer warms. Dry, slightly acidic finish. Full flavored, well balanced, and delicious.

Dark copper body, tan head. Aroma is sweet and fruity, some notes of berries and a bit of spiciness. Flavor is finely carbonated, some dry bitter hoppiness, floral and somewhat citrusy. Solid beer.

Light ruby red, with a large foamy head, light brown, laced well. Nose has ome sweet malts there, maybe some sour milk. Taste is some hops, malty, caramel sweetness. Long bitter aftertaste, hoppy and dry.

Bottle, from Charles Street Liquors in Boston. Pours a ruby red with some dark orange, and a large cream head. Attractive. Aroma of hops and fruit. Flavor is full of subtlety, slightly bitter with some soft malt, ripe grapefruit, cherry, and oranges. Finish is creamy smooth, with bitter notes, and the remaining high note of fruit. Mouthfeel is a touch sticky on the finish. Gosh, I am surprised at the similarities in flavor between this and an American IPA. Yes, the smooth palate deviates from AIPA mouthfeel, but hmm, the bitter finish, the fruity body . . . doesn’t matter ‘cause this is a solid brew anyhow.
