Dry caramal and malt nose that tend to get fruitier as it warms. Smooth feel with deep malt flavors. Toasty, with a light citric hops finish. A very satisfying ale. jbrus (4894), Delft, Netherlands

Brown color, beige head, good lace. Burnt caramel, herbal, well hopped, very bitter (almost nasty bitter), dry finish. Easy drinking, not bad but not too complex. BückDich (4857), McCall, Idaho, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 10, 2003 Dark red and brown color with perfect head on the pour. Lacing was plentiful and the head stayed with me for the whole ride. Smells very rich and complex. A well brewed beer in it’s own right for sure. Flavors are very distinct. On this one I got a carmel/fruit taste along with a sweet yeast aftertaste. Goes down very smooth, coats your mouth like a stout by flies down your throat like a pale. Overall a excitingly tasty beer, obviously the best english strong ale I’ve ever had. chriso (4851), London, Greater London, England
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 13, 2003 A rare opportunity to sample this in cask form. A fruity/malty beer, but surprisingly easy to drink for a beer of this strength - not cloying at all. Yeasty/biscuity tones in the aroma, plenty of hops to liven up the palate and a lengthy, well-balanced finish. However, not one to drink all night in a pub on the rare occasions when it appears on draught. Old Bank fo England, London WC1, December 2003.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 13, 2004 Bottled. Slight aroma of berry fruit. Dark brown colour with just a hint of red and no head at all. The taste is very malty and bitter with a slight fruitiness in the mouth. I'm afraid British BCAs are really not my cup of tea and this is supposed to be one of the best. leaparsons (4748), Leicester, Leicestershire, England

I must have been drunk the first time...Syrupy and heavy - like a Scottish heavy. Sweet malts are complemented by a bitter burnt toffee flavour. Spicy hops are present that give this beer a warming feeling - and the alcohol helps.
