Bottle from Whole Foods, Cary, NC. Pours deep copper with medium off-white head. Aroma corn flakes, caramel, dark fruit. Tastes malty, caramelly, with finishing fruit and nuttyness. Dense, smooth, velvety palate. Great complexity and balance. One of my great surprises of 2005.

What a colour! Dark red brown with a big but quickly disappearing head, leaving some lacing. Lemon/orange aroma with some malt and some chocolate. Lots of hops in the flavour, dry and with a sharp aftertaste. I’m loving it!

BB July 2006. Head is initially large, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, toasted bread), lightly to moderately hoppy (apricot, orange, flowers), lightly yeasty (dough), with light notes of nectarine and toffee. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, slightly astringent, slightly metallic. The metallic character keeps the mouthfeel from being all it can be. Aroma is pleasant but not really full of subtleties. The bitterness in the finish seems to come on too strongly, virtually from out of nowhere, and combined with the metallic nature it puts a damper on the overall enjoyment. A nice beer but not without flaws.

Outstanding English ale; nose is rather faint, but pleasing in its spiciness, which is echoed in the hints of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg in the flavor. Gorgeous head and color, nice finish.

The beer was 17 months past date. Dark amber color, no ruby hints. The aroma was malty, but perhaps a bit dusty. It’s heading towards Old Peculier, but lacks the plummy notes. Small bubbles bite; toasty malty finish. Nice level of hoppy bitterness. If memory serves, this is a bit smoother than some, so the extra months may have mellowed it somewhat. Spice notes arrived half through the glass. Always a pleasure.
