Flavor is dominated by a dry, pleasant bitterness, complimenting a slightly fruity, roasty, sweet maltiness. Leaves a clean palate and a desire for more. MOboy (446), Kansas City, Missouri, USA

As soon as I saw the beautiful amber color slowly make it’s way into my glass, I knew it was going to be love. Excellent beer. If this is what all English Strong Ale’s taste like, then damn, I may have a new fav. Re-rate: Still good, but I have found many more since then. DavefromChicago (201), Illinois, USA

Hops dominate aroma w. some caramel/coffee. Nicely rounded flavor - very well balanced w. sweet maltiness up front and a great hop finish. A classic. Uglyradio (775), Greenville, South Carolina, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 25, 2003 Good sweet malty aroma -with a hint of nuts mixed in. Has a thin, mocha colored head which dissipates quickly but has good lacing. Pleasant bourbon like copper red appearance. Flavor - has a little bit of a dopplebok flavor to it. Slightly sweet but not cloying. Gets "chewier" as it warms - detect some nuttiness to it along with raisins and dates. Excellent mouthfeel - just feels right. Classic bottle. Overall - an excellent ale. Jayb0 (752), Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 14, 2004 Excellent beer. Foamy, oatmeal colored head leaves thick lacing. Red brown, clear. Nose of apricot, candy sugar, maybe cinnamon. Coats the mouth with light flavors of malt, fruit, milk chocolate, and spice. Finishes with a dry, somewhat woody, hop bite. Very drinkable yet sturdy. badgerben (3600), Blaine, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 11, 2004 Rubyish color and a long lasting head. Aroma suggested wood to me. Taste is quite nice: a mix of fruit typical of an English beer, but with a hit of the wood taste one might expect from some Scotches. Malt and hops make their appearances. A wonderful offering from Fullers, and my 200th tasting!
