The only thing that I've liked better was Thames Welsh ESB, which is chewier. Slightly smokey, raisin and prune, Maris Otter malt aroma which gives way to some toffee and vanilla as it warms. Ruddy brown beer, great bottle, seafoam-consistancy tan head. Finely bittered -- this is the way to do hops, so that it compliments the beer without tasting like hop tea. Satin mouthfeel. Raisin, cream, bock/barleywine and ale flavors which leave toffee sweetness on your lips. I.C.suds (187), Da U.P. eh?, Michigan, USA

A British friend once remarked ’pretty good for a southern beer’ Very complex and chewy not too gassy like some other bottle conditioned beers. Frank (1068), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Thick, slightly reddish head leaves sheets of lace for the whole glass. Fruity malt aroma. Front is slightly sweet. Flavors of apple, caramel, and alcohol become more pronounced as the beer warms. Dry, slightly acidic finish. Full flavored, well balanced, and delicious. nearbeer (1860), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Clear copper-ruby with a one-finger head that leaves a nice frosting. Aroma of spicy toffee cake with orange zest. Flavor is earthy caramel with orange, toasted nut, and some spicy apple and wood. Just enough roast to give a nice coffee-cocoa, orange and oak aftertaste. Medium body is smooth, slightly watery in a good-drinkable way and has a dry finish. The best British beer I found in two weeks in England! Apr 2008 update: bottle purchased in Atlanta, even better than I remembered, upped from 4.2 to 4.6 Wiseblood (658), Clarksville, Tennessee, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jul 24, 2003 Deep reddish brown with an off-white loose head. Aroma is malty with a little caramel and chocolate. Some alcohol also evident, but seems to be in balance with the rest of the beer. Immediate taste is an very deep sensation of bitter malt and fruit. Body is full and rounded with good carbonation. Deeply smooth and bitter finish. A warming, rich, satisfying beer with the advantages of bottle conditioning shining through. Wow! Sensationally good. Definitely a must try. garv (24), dalton, Massachusetts, USA

A good hearty beer for a cold winter evening. The story behind the hops makes it even better. Pablo McStouthead (69), L.A, California, USA

Hazy brownish-orange with a healthy and pleasing dose of hops. Chocolate and spices abound on the nose. Similar sensations in the flavor with a rather dry finish. Still one of my favorites.
