Apr 16, 2002 Deep garnet in color, the head is creamy and beige, the lace covers the glass well. Nose is malt, caramel, slightly sweet. Start is malt sweet, the middle is medium to full, the finish is ’Hop heaven’, dry, acidic and moderate carbonation tops off this ’Most Excellent’ strong English Ale.

Oct 28, 2001 Updated: Jun 2, 2004yet another rerate of this beer. glowing amber-red, almost pink, with a creamy frothy head. fruit + toffee + goldings smells. taste starts with full, juicy, sweet, buttered-toast malt, then gradually dries up and becomes peppery and bitter, and maybe a bit medicinal. lingering taste of fruitcake with heaps of orange peel. this has a lot of class.

Jul 15, 2002 Wonderfully balanced with sweet maltiness and fruitcake aromas. It has a rich and full palate with a almost bitter sweet finish. This is not the type of beer that you can have anytime but it goes well at the end of a meal with dried fruits and cheese.

Dec 4, 2004 1 pt. 2.6 fl. oz. (Best before: 19 OCT 2005, sampled 4 DEC 2004): hazed copper, with a modest tan foam that leaves sticky lacing all over the pint glass…Sticky alcohol aroma; noticeable sugar coated raisins, toasted grain, mild black pepper, burnt sugar and wet hop flowers. Nicely carbonated as evidenced by the tingling across the tongue and the very retentive cream. Slightly (surprising for me) spicy palate, with flavours ranging from a nicely striking bitterness up front to the long dry finish full of toffee, mashed red apples, hints of orange zest, and sticky honey. This one has breadth and depth. A great range of hop and malt flavour and a depth and complexity few can boast. Wouldn’t it be nice to have this one out of a beer engine?

Apr 12, 2003 Updated: Mar 2, 2009An extremely foamy head on this brew.Good amber color.Fruity aroma and very smooth.Great lacing!Has an aftertaste to it after it gets a little warm, but this one I like.I definitely would drink this brew again and again and again!
Re-Rate:Bottle. Poured a medium sized vanilla fizzy head that had poor retention, fast rising carbonation, spotty amounts of lacing, and an orange hue with a golden tint. The aroma was fruity, hoppy, sweet, malty, caramel, alcohol, and rich. The flavor was hoppy, caramel, malty, fruity, and the ABV came through although not overpowering. The mouthfeel was mostly smooth with a tinglyness and the body was light-medium. A well balanced beer with a warming sensation as it warmed up, worthy of a try, and a beer I will drink again if it comes my way.

May 6, 2004 Very sweet smelling ale, fruity. Dark ruby color. The flavor is initially sweet with some bitterness in the backend. More hop flavor and bitterness would help this beer.
