Lots of very tiny bubbles, ddark amber body. Complex malt underlies the ripe fruits and spices. Nice toasted dry barley flavor, lots of ripe fruits. Great balance, smooth mouthfeel.

Hazy red color with a head of small whiteish bubbles that dissapeared to leave a small sheen of bubbles floating atop my beer. Dried fruit aroma mainly, thats all I could get from it. Spicy flavor at the beginning that turns to bitter, then to hops. Leaves a crisp finish and a slight bitter taste in my mouth. I like it. As a side note, when I opened the bottle it started to foam like crazy. I dont know if shook it while examining the bottle or what, but it was bizzare.

This ale pours a dark red with a light tan head. Grassy / grainy notes. Doughy scents. Also grape or raisin. First sip is bitter. With roasted fruit / grain flavours. Hint of coffee. The finish is still stong with hops but good. The palate is dry and malty. Very good Beer.

(500 ml bottle: $3.99 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) I’ve let this age in my darkened, cool bedroom for many months, long enough that I’ve exceeded the supposed Best By date of 06-Jan-06 by four months. No matter, this flavorful English ale is delicious. Malty, roasty, chocolaty, and lightly smoky, but balanced by a moderate hop bitterness that makes its presence known in the crisp finish and then remains on the palate for the rest of the session. For an English beer that’s seen this much aging, I’m pretty impressed by how much bite the hops has retained. While the malty and chocolaty nose is reasonably aromatic, it really doesn’t compare to the flavor, not even in enjoyment. Medium-full bodied with a nice, round mouthfeel and playful carbonation. Dark amber in color and fairly cloudy, but there is still a good amount of muddy sediment remaining in the bottle. The tall, beige head shows exceptional retention, never dipping below a quarter inch, and it deposits a thick, dense blanket of foamy lace on the glass. There used to be a time when I didn’t care for this beer (okay, it was relatively soon after I started drinking "good" beer), so I haven’t bought any since then. I’ve really been missing out because this is an excellent beer. Glad to have rediscovered it.

Bottle dated bast before 08/MAY/08. I’ve passed this beer over many times before because I didn’t like the date on the bottle. I was shocked to find one that still had a year left on it. Poured into an English pint. Dark copper amber with a big, everlasting, off white head. Nice cookie, or bready malt, quite a bit if ripe fruit esters, and a slight earthy hop nose. Sort of a cracker flavor, with some earthy-gritty-mushroom flavor. Very rich, full palate, with a dry finish. Really nice beer. A pure pleasure to drink.

Dark ruby with a generous layer of light tan head. Christmas pudding--toffee and dark fruit, rum. Fruit leather. Something a little like creme brulee--a little buttery, a little smokey. That’s not quite it, but it’s along those lines. Flavor is bright and spicy, toffee and dark fruitiness. Woody bitterness. An unusual tannic quality that adds depth and interest, and provides the lingering note of the finish. Clean, fairly light body. A beer of character and distinction. I can picture duck going rather well with this.

Dark amber with a large off white head. Metallic aroma, sweet malt and alcohol taste. Very dry finish. Why have I never rated this? Good beer.
