Tasted to me a slightly reigned in version of the vintage ales. Great nutty maltiness without being sweet in the finish. Hops are there in the background, but the malt is definitely the star here and how it shines...

Re rate. Saved a bottle from the last time I sampled this beer to see if aging improved it and happily it did. Spicy golding hops with a background of nuts in the nose, hop grain and biscuits in the mouth and a chalky, hoppily bitter finish with a suggestion of tangerine. Previous rating only 3.4, age it for a year or two.

Fruity aroma like the description states, much like fruitcake smothered in whiskey or brandy. The taste is complex, with notes of candied fruit, chocolate, and spices. Each sip I take I taste something I didn’t taste before. This was recommended to me by a store employee, and I’m glad I tried it. I really like the initial sweetness and bitter finish. Definitely a keeper, but a little expensive to drink often.

A delightful brew. Nearly perfect bitter hop/roasted malt balance. Head is initially frothy. Color is a deep amber hue. Finish is fruity. Definitely the best English Strong that I have ever had out of a bottle.

A brown style ale that is superb to drink. There is a good flavor of malt, but it is so smooth. Started off doughy, but the hops came in on the back end to balance it out. I’m going to find another one of this.

Beautiful looking beer, reddish brown, with an off white head. malty yeasty aroma, taste starts sweet with dough and hints of raisin, and moves quickly to a tight bitter finish that stays around a while. good beer

Bottle conditioned 1pint 2.6 ounce brown bottle, back label says "best before Sept 02" had sitting since early Aug. 02 Color is a nice hazy dark brown with a deep dark orangy glow. Finger high head of creamy foam, tannish in hue, big bubbles and lumpy from a vigorous pour, has some spotty lacing. Smell is all caramel; sweet and candied toffee aroma and loads of caramel with notes of slight dark fruit and fresh bread. Hint of alcohol late and deep. Taste is super smooth caramel malt, subdued in its subtle sweetness, balanced in with the perfect amount of earthy hop twinged bite and bitterness, and slightly drying. The hops start to make a bigger appearance and gets more noticeable as you go. Feel is solid medium bodied, slightly buttery and chewy, all soothingly smooth with a nice calming earthy dryness in the finish. Lending this barleywine to be incredibly delicious and drinkable, very enjoyable and head swimmingly soothing. Made for a great night cap.... now I know I'll get some sleep. Finishing the big bottle goes right to your head. Wow.

Thick rich head and a deep reddish brown color. The hops and malt are well balanced. Simply a great beer.
