Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
Ingredients: Pale malt; Northdown and Challenger hops. Dry hopped with Goldings.
GBBF Champion Beer 1989.
Slight change of recipe in 1999.
Chiswick Bitter is Fuller’s popular session strength ale, which derives its name from the area of London where Fuller’s is based. This lower strength beer is held in high regard across the South East of England and, like its stablemates London Pride and ESB, has won the prestigious CAMRA Great British Beer Festival, Beer of the Year award, in 1989. In fact, Fuller’s is the only brewery in England whose top three brands have won this award: a fitting testament to the skill and dedication of the Fuller’s brewers!

(At Black Door, Helsinki, on 2008-09-14) Amber. Clear. Medium sized lightly tan head with lace like edges. Malts and yeast in nose. Quite light and dry palate with little carbonation. Malts, bitterness, hops and yeast in taste. I suppose the cask has gone past its prime time.

Handpulled cask at Wheatsheaf, Ealing. I’ve not enjoyed Fullers much of late, but this little gem proved to me that they can still brew a good drop of ale. A lovely amber session bitter with a good lasting white head. Buiscuity malt with a very fresh dose of challenger hops. Why arn’t Fullers other beers still as good as this?

Brillinat golden amber. Floral hoppy aroma, perhaps diacetyl notes. Very thin. Light bitterness on the sides of the tounge. Diacetyl rounding of palate. Some hop flavor.

[on tap at the Corn Stores, Reading] Surprisingly pale brown for a bitter. Initially fruity (maybe apples?) with a touch of malt. Definitely the Fuller’s flavour in there too - a hint of watered-down London Pride. Very dry hoppy aftertaste, like the inside of an oast house - not too bitter though. Overall, this is a fairly average bitter, which tastes nearly as weak as the low alcohol content suggests. One for (long) session drinking rather than for pleasurable tasting.

This is what session bitter is all about. Gorgeous aroma of Golding’s - put your head in bag full of them and that’s what it’s like - fruity (orange and lemon?), floral and backed up by some (in the word’s of Protzy) biscuity malt. There is a firm but light malt body, lovely green hops (altough they slowly decrease over the period of time the cask is on) and good bitterness. It’s a bitter and it has the wonderful interplay between malt and hops with that classic English fruity yeast. If you’re American then you should love it as it adheres to a style incredibly well. A testament to English subtlety!

Cask at The Artillery Arms, London. Pours amber with a frothy head. Flowery and earthy hop nose. Good bitterness, a hint of caramel. Light-bodied. A decent bitter
