Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller's beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

Nicer on cask. Aroma comes out a bit better than in the bottle. Starts out with a medium malty flavour and then the hops finish up the journey. Nice light floral aroma. This is a good session beer.

Cask (handpump) @ The Victoria, W2, London. Deep copper amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma is malty, fruity with notes of hops. Flaovr is sweet and warm, fruity with some spiceness in the end. Duration is good. Full body.

Cask at The Fishermans Cottage, ReadingThe cellar seemed a trifle cold so it took a while for the aroma to develop, but I did pick up raisins and malt; the pint was a crystal clear light chestnut colour with a thin off-white head that lasted to the bottom, leaving soem attractive tracing behind; big and chewy in the mouth, sweet but not overwhelmingly so, warming, rich and fruity; with a touch of bitterness and spiceness afterwards. A really complex beer.

Cask, Harcourt Arms, Oxford. Chestnut pour with a small coarse white cap. Floral hops blending nicely with cool berry esters and soft malt. Brisk, building bitterness, kind of a woody hop flavor, plums, round malt. A good pint, and with a bit more lively carbonation I think it would be significantly better. This wasn’t flat, but it was a bit dull.

Enjoyed a pint in a very quiet and relaxing atmosphere early on a Friday evening (29.09.2006) at the Garibaldi, St Albans - now and then described as the best Fuller’s pub outside London. I also had a half at The Mad Bishop and Bear in Paddington (19.09.2006).
Both were in perfect condition and served in good (room) temperature. Deep amber coloured with a reddish tint. Great clarity. Very low head but some nice lacing on the glass. A bit poor on aroma, but a dried fruit component came through. Well balanced flavour with caramel and fruity bitterness. Hints of malt and hops. Low carbonation and moderate mouthfeel.
