Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller's beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

What a wounderfull and refreshing beer, clean and bitter with some grape like sweetness at the begining, full body, dry finish, my bitter of choise, addicting stuff.

Aroma gives fruit and malt but not overpowering a bit of floural hops also. Taste is similar, a bit or spicey really fruity but really well balanced and in top condition too. One of my favourate beers from sweden.

I stopped at Quips Pub in Lancaster and had this beer on-cask along side a traditional Fish-n-Chips dinner. What an enjoyable experience. This beer tastes very clean and a bit light but not overly thin. Just cool and refreshing. It is a mild beer and it was a good choice to accompany my dinner. On the breakdown Appearance: Served in a pint glass. The bar was dimly lit but it looked like it was a light amber brown, semi translucent, and it had a small creamy head. It remained nice and frothy the entire duration of the beer. Smell: I did not get much smell (it was served to me cold and I assume based on the tatse that there was probably more aroma possible if it had warmed up more). I did get a little bit of smooth hop and a gentle malty sort of thickness in the nose. Taste: Beautifully balanced bitter and mild sweet flavors. The slight bitter hop is so gentle that I would not call it a bite, only an attribute. There were clear suggestions of the sugars beside the hops. The aftertaste was malty sweet and only mildly bitter. Mouthfeel: Very smooth and full of flavor with a big body. Still, it is crisp on the swallow and very refreshing. Drinkability: This beer is so mild on the palate and so well balanced it is as drinkable of a beer if this style, as I’ve ever had. It is very sessionable. It stands well on it’s own and also, because it is so balanced it doesn’t impair your palate to enjoy your dinner either. Very good choice. I highly recommend Fuller’s ESB. Hope this is helpful. Cheers!

Cask at Charlie’s Pub, Copenhagen
Amber color. The main characteristic is a malty flavor and a soft and full mouthfeel; also with a good bitterness.

Cask at Fuller’s Ale and Pie House, Southwark, London. This one has a heavier flavor than Pride, driven by generous piles of brown sugar and molasses, accented by citrusy hops that are most noticeable in the aroma (more or less killed by the malt on the tongue.) For some reason the ESB doesn’t stand up to London Pride for me...it seems to reach for a complexity of flavor that it doesn’t quite achieve, lost in an unbalanced muddle.

Deep amber in colour with quite a malty/toffee aroma. The palate is well balanced and shows more fruit than the bottled version. Its a nice complex beer, and I enjoyed the different dimension from the cask. The finish, like the bottle is a little sweet and not so bitter.
